Tottenham Hotspur have agreed terms to sign Serge Aurier from Paris Saint-Germain for £23.1 million but are checking on the on-going legal issues related to a two-month prison sentence the defender received. Aurier has been put up for sale by PSG, who have signed Dani Alves in his right-back position and also have Thomas Meunier, with the French club believing the Ivory Coast international needs a fresh start to his career. PSG also have to sell players to satisfy the demands of Financial Fair Play following the world record £198m signing of Neymar. Chelsea had considered making a move for Aurier but Spurs have agreed a deal although there is a complication over the 24-year-old’s appeal against the suspended sentence he received after he allegedly assaulted a police officer outside a nightclub in Paris.
Aurier is highly unlikely to go to jail but the issue prevented him from entering the UK last November and playing for PSG against Arsenal in the Champions League. His visa application was revoked by the Home Office. There is confidence from all parties that Aurier will be allowed to sign and play for Spurs but the club needs to check with the Home Office. Spurs have been in the market for a new right-back, or right wing-back, since the sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City for £50m. Aurier has agreed terms as have PSG and now Spurs are awaiting clearance from the Home Office.
It is expected to a busy final few days of the transfer window for Spurs with manager Mauricio Pochettino having already signed centre-half Davinson Sanchez from Ajax for what could rise to a club record fee of goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga from Southampton.
Pochettino wants two more signings in addition to Aurier before the end of the month. One of them could be another central defender – the 19-year-old Juan Foyth from Estudiantes who has also been linked to PSG.
Spurs are set to sell defender Kevin Wimmer with Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion expected to meet the £15m asking price.
