Phil Neville invited to join England Under-21s coaching set-up

Everton captain Phil Neville will join the England Under-21 coaching staff for Wednesday's game against Belgium.

The 35-year-old's first steps towards a possible move into coaching come due to the England reshuffle in the wake of Fabio Capello's resignation.

Regular under-21 coach Stuart Pearce has stepped up to manage the senior side for their friendly against Holland on the same day.

Neville will work alongside Brian Eastick and John Peacock.

Eastick is one of Pearce's assistants with the under-21 side while Peacock is normally in charge of the under-17s.

England Under-21s are currently top of Euro 2013 Group Eight with four wins and one loss from the five games they have played. Belgium are in second place.

Crystal Palace's pacy winger Wilfried Zaha and Hull City's former Manchester United midfielder Cameron Stewart are both in contention for debuts in the game.

呢d新轉變當然留返俾遲d正式上任嗰個去諗啦, pearce呢場只要穩穩陣陣, 唔好亂搞其他野, 過左去就算喇~~

Cleverley blow for England with United star expected to miss out on Holland friendly

Fears are growing that Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has been dealt a crushing blow and been ruled out of England's friendly with Holland.

The 22-year-old had been expected to earn his first cap after being called into Stuart Pearce's squad for the match at Wembley on Wednesday.

However Cleverley suffered an injury setback in United's Europa League defeat to Ajax at Old Trafford on Thursday night and is now not expected to join the squad.

It would be the second time the talented playmaker has missed out on an international opportunity, with his first call up coming for the original game with Holland with was cancelled due to the London riots in August.

Cleverley has endured a mixed season at club level. Having proved himself worthy of a starting berth when fit, he has all too often succumbed to knocks, the most serious of which saw him miss several months with ankle ligament problems.

Speaking ahead of his call-up, he said: 'I don't really listen to what people are saying. I just go out and play my football.

'If I can find some good form from now until the end of the season, I would be more than happy to be involved in the European Championships.

'I am not sure whether it is a good time though. I know Stuart Pearce quite well from my time with the Under 21s. He is a good manager. Hopefully I will be involved.'

Darren Bent ruled out of England friendly with injury

Striker Darren Bent has been ruled out of England's friendly against the Netherlands after injuring his ankle in Aston Villa's goalless draw at Wigan.

Bent landed awkwardly following a challenge from Antolin Alcaraz during the second half at the DW Stadium and left the pitch on a stretcher.

The 28-year-old later left the ground wearing a protective boot.

"He was in agony in the dressing room," said Villa manager Alex McLeish. "He is certainly out of the England squad."

Bent received lengthy treatment on the pitch and McLeish fears his forward could be set for a long spell on the sidelines.

"Going by his reaction, it seems serious," the Scot added.

"You never know if it settles down in the next 24 to 48 hours before he has a scan but he went over on it badly.

"The pitch was very heavy because of the rugby [league - Wigan Warriors played at the stadium last Saturday]. It sapped the energy from a lot of players and Darren has been unlucky to go into one of the pieces of turf that has been dug up.

"Normally it is your ligaments that are affected in a situation like that. He has been grimacing and has been a little bit nauseous in the dressing room."

The Football Association usually ask to see players before ruling them out of an international, but with Bent due to have a scan on Monday, McLeish said: "I think there will be a bit of common sense applied to this one.

"Our doctor has a good relationship with the England medical set-up. If [Darren] has to report he will certainly be limping to the headquarters."
