Hit man Robin strikes again! Van Persie picks up prestigious PFA award

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie's marvellous season has got even better after winning the PFA Players' Player of the Year award.

Van Persie's 34 goals in all competitions were enough to tip the vote towards the Arsenal captain.

The Dutch international's prolific strike-rate fuelled his team's revival after a terrible start to the season for the Gunners.

Manchester City trio David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Joe Hart, Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker and Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney made up the rest of the list.



Kyle Walker was voted Young Player of the Year by his fellow professionals.

PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor assessed each of the candidates when the shortlist was first announced.

Taylor said Van Persie, 28, has now started to show his true potential after being hampered by injuries in the past.

Taylor said: 'He has been amazing. When you think of the players Arsene Wenger has brought to the club - he came from Feyenoord for £2.75million I think and that is incredible really.

'When you think of (Dennis) Bergkamp, (Ruud) van Nistelrooy, (Marco) van Basten - he is in that mould of absolutely top-class strikers that Holland, quite phenomenally, manages to produce.

'You could pick half a dozen of his goals out for goal of the season. Arsenal were struggling for some time but he was a real talisman for them.

'He seems to have lifted the team and got them back believing in themselves again and looking to qualify for the Champions League, giving all the Arsenal fans some hope.'

Manchester City players dominated the Premier League divisional team with Joe Hart, Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and David Silva all represented. And three from Tottenham in Walker, Scott Parker and Gareth Bale.

'If other people are saying it, it is special, but it is even more special if your opponents are saying it,' he said.

'It is very special because you are playing against them week in week out and every single player does everything to win and in the end if they make up their minds that I'm the best player it is a big honour.'

Van Persie may have picked up the top individual honour but he was quick to point out it would not have been possible without his Arsenal team-mates.

'Without them I could not have achieved it,' he said.

'For example Theo Walcott, he has given me more than 12 assists and I do really appreciate that.'

'Now I am (confident). To be fair, when I first went there I wasn't really as confident and I wasn't really sure I could do it. It took a bit of time but after a couple of months slowly realised I could do a good job there.'

Bookmakers fear they could be the victims of a betting sting after large sums were placed on outsider Kyle Walker to win PFA Young Player of the Year.

The Tottenham full-back opened as a 33-1 rank outsider for the award but a string of big bets saw him move quickly to 5-6 favourite before most of the high street bookies closed the market.

"Enough is enough. After punters began trying to get £1000 bets on Kyle Walker to win Young PFA Player of Year we've closed the market," said William Hill media relations director Graham Sharpe on Twitter.

"Forgive me for being cynical, but I can't help but think the already decided outcome of Young PFA Player of the Year may have been 'leaked'!"

Walker is arguably the lowest profile name on the young player shortlist which also contains Manchester City star striker Sergio Aguero, who was also nominated for the senior award, and Walker's team-mate, Gareth Bale, who won the senior award last season.

Other high street bookmakers confirmed they were getting similar requests to put money on Walker before closing their books.

“We did close the book. It’s just about us exercising caution,” Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes was quoted as saying in the Mirror; Paddy Power's Darren Haines added: "There were unexpected lumpy bets on Kyle Walker and we closed the betting.”
Also on the shortlist for the award are Manchester United's Danny Welbeck, Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge and Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
