Senna snubs Swansea move
Midfielder agrees new deal with Villarreal

Spanish star Marcos Senna has rejected an offer from Swansea to stay at Villarreal.

The 34-year-old, whose existing contract expired earlier this summer, has agreed a one-year extension to stay at El Madrigal.

Senna held talks with Swansea about a possible move to Wales, but the midfielder has opted to stay in Spain.

Senna is believed to have called Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers to inform him of his decision to stay with Villarreal rather than take up the challenge of moving to the Premier League.

Speaking on his Twitter account, Senna thanked Villarreal president Fernando Roig for awarding him a new contract.

"I decided to accept the proposal of the Villarreal family and I thank Roig for his confidence," said Senna.

"I am very happy to follow at Villarreal."

REDS DOWNING BID REBUFFED - REPORTS

Aston Villa have rejected a renewed £15million offer from Liverpool for winger Stewart Downing, according to widespread reports.

The Reds failed with a £12m bid at the end of last season but they will have to increase their offer yet again, with Villa understood to be holding out for a £19m fee for the England international.

The Merseysiders are believed to have offered David Ngog as a makeweight but, as was the case when he was offered to Sunderland, his £40,000-a-week wage could be a stumbling block.

Downing still has two years to run on his current deal at Villa Park but has already stated he will not extend that contract.

The 26-year-old is understood to be frustrated at the Midlands club following a disappointing campaign marred by two changes of management.

However, having already sold Ashley Young to Manchester United for £17m, the Villans are under no pressure to sell another of their key assets.

A source close to Villa said: "The club have made it known what they regard as a fair price for Stewart Downing, if he is to be sold."

Speaking last month, Downing said: "My agent had a meeting with the club - just one meeting - and he just felt it was the right time not to sign my contract.

"I've still got two years to go, so I've still got a long time to go, so I just decided to leave it as it is. Will I be at Villa next season? I'm not sure."

Downing is due to report to pre-season training on Friday with Villa.

He endured an injury-hit first campaign after signing for them when still recovering from a broken foot. But last season Downing was in outstanding form and was Villa's player of the year.

STOKE CLOSE ON BIRMINGHAM PAIR

Peter Coates thinks Stoke are close to striking a deal with Birmingham for Scott Dann and Cameron Jerome.

The clubs have spent weeks locked in negotiations over defender Dann and striker Jerome - and Coates believes they are now close to agreeing.

However, the Potters chief warned the club has yet to talk terms with either player and that there was still a chance the moves could fall through.

"We have made an offer and are hoping to do a deal that will satisfy both clubs," said Coates.

"It is my understanding we were very close to a deal, but then you still have to sort things out with the players. These things can take forever.

"You have to have other irons in the fire because so many things can go wrong. Sometimes you think you have a deal and it doesn't happen."

Nasri battle hots up as Chelsea aim to derail Manchester City's £19m swoop

Chelsea have launched a late bid to scupper Manchester City's £19million move for Samir Nasri.

The Arsenal midfielder has been at the centre of a three-way battle for his signature between Barclays Premier League giants Chelsea, City and Manchester United

City were confident that they had won the race, with the deal close to completion. But Chelsea are now bidding to tempt the Frenchman to make the move across London.

City wanted to grab Nasri just 24 hours after Carlos Tevez told Sportsmail of his wish to leave the club is also seen as an important moment for a club who will play in the Champions League for the first time this season.

After the signing of Gael Clichy for £7m earlier this week, Nasri's exit represents another serious loss for Arsenal to one of their Premier League rivals.

City are also tracking a frontline replacement for Tevez and expect another transfer powerplay by owner Sheik Mansour within the next week.

City have dug their heels in over Tevez's Eastlands future and insist he will not be allowed to leave for less than £50m.

The club's unhappy skipper was hoping for a swift resolution to his demand for a move after issuing a statement that he wanted to switch to a country where his family, including his two daughters, would be happy to settle.

But City are in no mood to relent over a valuation that looks like dashing his hopes of a move to Real Madrid in Spain or Juventus or Inter Milan in Italy and forcing him to stay against his wishes.
