Everton to complete signing of former Cardiff striker Bothroyd on free transfer

Everton are closing in on former Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd and expect to complete the deal this week.

Bothroyd, capped once by England, is a free agent having left Cardiff after they failed to win promotion to the Barclays Premier League.

And Everton boss David Moyes has pipped Celtic and Sunderland to the forward's signature.

Bothroyd spent three years in Wales and was the Bluebirds’ top scorer last season.

He netted 20 times but Cardiff blew their chance of automatic promotion to the Premier League before losing to Reading in the play-off semi-finals.

The hitman started out with Arsenal and has also played with Coventry, Blackburn, Charlton and Wolves. He also had a spell in Italy with Perugia.

Everton manager Moyes will hope Bothroyd, 29, can be as successful as Jermaine Beckford, who was snapped up on a free from Leeds last summer and went on to score 10 times in his first season.

Bothroyd was the first Cardiff player in 111 years to play for England when he came on as a second-half sub in the 2-1 defeat by France at Wembley last November.

Dalglish set to kick-off Reds summer spree with £1m Roma keeper Doni

Liverpool are set to complete a £1million deal for Roma goalkeeper Doni as Kenny Dalglish embarks on his summer spending spree.

The Brazilian shot-stopper Doni, who is under contract with the Serie A club for a further season,will provide experienced cover for No 1 Pepe Reina casting doubt over current understudy Brad Jones.

Anfield boss Dalglish will be handed significant transfer funds to revive the Reds as title contenders next season and hopes to secure the services of Sunderland star Jordan Henderson and Blackburn defender Phil Jones.

'I spoke to the club (Roma) yesterday and they confirmed they are holding talks with Liverpool to reach an agreement regarding the transfer of Doni,' said the goalkeeper's agent Ovidio Colucci.

'Once an agreement is reached betwen the two clubs, we will begin negotiating personal terms with Liverpool.

'Doni would be very happy to join Liverpool and play in the Premier League.'

The 31-year-old joined Roma in 2005 from Brazilian side Juventude.

The South American has been an understudy to Julio Sergio in recent seasons, and made 16 league appearances for Roma this term.

Icelandic hit-man Heidar Helguson has penned a new contract at Loftus Road.

The 33 year-old striker, who scored 13 goals in the R's Championship-winning season last term, has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal for the R's.

Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, the Rangers number nine expressed his delight at inking a new deal, commenting: "I'm absolutely delighted.

"My future lies here. You want to get things sorted out as early as possible and I've been able to do that, which feels good.

"I wasn't sure what was going to happen when I came back last season, but I spoke to Neil (Warnock) and he wanted me to stay.

"Everybody wants to be wanted and it's nice when a Manager says things like that.

"He deserves a lot of credit for the work that he's done here in just over a year."

Helguson added: "I was happy with my (goals) return last year and to be able to play a part in winning the league was fantastic.

"Promotion is starting to sink in and it feels good - really good! Especially after signing a new deal, which means I can now play a part in next season.

"It will be tough, but I think we've got a great chance of doing well."

Helguson's form was key in the Hoops' domination of the second tier last season and R's boss Warnock believes the striker's experience will be crucial in the Premier League.

"Heidar made a massive contribution last year, and he'll play a big role again for us in the top-flight next season," Warnock told www.qpr.co.uk.

"People forget just how many games he played last season - he was exceptional.

"It's not just his goals - it's his overall game.

"He's a big presence in the dressing room; a steadying influence in both training and on matchdays; and he's a great professional.

"He's also got the experience of having played in the Premier League, so I'm delighted we've managed to agree a new deal with him."

Alexis Sanchez has agreed personal terms with Barcelona, claims Udinese president Franco Soldati, just 24 hours after he said the Catalans were in pole position for the Chilean's signature.

The deal will be based on a ?3 million per annum contract, but Soldati insists it does not mean a move is finalised as the two clubs have yet to agree a fee. Nonetheless, Udinese will not stand in Sanchez's way as he seeks a move to the European champions.

"From what we were told by the player's agent Fernando Felicevich, Alexis Sanchez has an agreement with Barcelona for a contract worth ?3m a season. This does not necessarily mean he will go, but it is what the player wants," Soldati said, according to Chilean source La Tercera.

"We hope to fulfil the player's wish, but I don't think negotiations will be finalised until at least the end of June."

Udinese have set their price for Sanchez, in excess of ?30m, and the attacker will not move unless Barca match the club's valuation.

"Sanchez's yes [to Barcelona] does not mean a yes from Udinese," he disclosed.

"These are two different things. We will begin talks with Barcelona and we will not stop them from speaking with the player. But we are just starting with the talks.

"If they pay us what we want then there will be no problems, but we are yet to speak about this. For the moment Barcelona are favourites to land Sanchez ahead of Juventus and Inter. These are the three clubs that are close to him, but nothing has been sealed yet in regards to a move.

"Again, this is just the start of things, but we want to finish negotiations by the end of the month. The player's opinion obviously counts, but there are other things we need to look at.

"In any case we are optimistic all will end well."

Luka Modric's advisor insists the Spurs playmaker "will not go to Manchester United" this summer as chairman Daniel Levy "will not let him go".

The Croatian star has been strongly linked with a move to United as the Premier League champions seek a replacement for Paul Scholes.

But Modric's advisor, Mario Mamic, doubts that the ex-Dinamo Zagreb player will move to Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old is under contract until 2016 so not matter what United offer, Mamic reckons the Spurs board will be unwilling to sell.

"Luka will not go to Manchester United and he will also stay at Tottenham because I know that president Daniel Levy will not let him go," he told Croatian newspaper Jutarnji List.

Mamic's father Zdravko is vice-president at Dinamo and believes United may have to top the club-record £30.75million they paid for Dimitar Berbatov in order to land Modric.

"I heard that somebody has offered £20m pounds for Luka but that's crazy," he added.

"When we talk about Modric, that price would only be enough to buy peanuts."
