Bayer Leverkusen's Tranquillo Barnetta to miss Champions League group stages


The Switzerland international faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines as he will undergo knee surgery on Monday

Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen have received some disturbing news from the treatment table regarding the fitness of Tranquillo Barnetta as the 26-year-old will have to go under the knife to shake off a knee injury.

The Switzerland international missed the opening weeks of the 2011-12 campaign due to a hip injury and the midfielder won't return to the pitch any time soon following a new fitness problem.

Leverkusen have revealed on their official website that Barnetta will undergo surgery on Monday to treat ligament damage in his right knee.

It's not yet exactly known how long the midfielder will be sidelined, but the German club fear that he could be unavailable for the rest of 2011.

Barnetta's scheduled surgery means that the midfielder will miss his side's Champions League Group E campaign against Chelsea, Valencia and Genk.

Barnetta faces long lay-off
 

Bayer 04 midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta will undergo a knee operation on Monday to treat ligament damage in his right knee. The Switzerland international, who has been sidelined over recent weeks with a hip injury, will probably not be available again until after the winter break. The operation will be performed in Augsburg by Dr. Ulrich Boenisch in the presence of Bayer 04 club doctor Gregor Hencke.
