Chris Smalling will be sold by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho this summer, with West Ham United, West Bromwich Albion and Everton already interested. England international Smalling could be available for as little as £15million after Mourinho decided to replace him with Sweden’s Victor Lindelof. Mourinho is not convinced Smalling is good enough as he bids to turn United back into Premier League title challengers and also holds reservations over his mental toughness. The 27-year-old missed six weeks of the season after suffering a broken toe in a Europa League win over Fenerbahce at Old Trafford in October that resulted in Mourinho questioning his desire to play through the pain barrier.
Smalling has recently changed agents in a bid to help him get the best move and West Ham, West Brom and Everton are three of the clubs monitoring his situation.
West Ham could offer Smalling a return to London, where he was born and played for Fulham before joining United in 2010. West Brom and Everton are both in the market for a centre-back this summer and are watching Smalling’s situation carefully. He was voted Players’ Player of the Year for United at the end of former manager Louis van Gaal’s final season in charge. But Mourinho wants to partner Eric Bailly with Lindelof, who will cost £31m from Benfica, and wants to keep Phil Jones as versatile back-up. United are also confident of completing a deal to sign striker Álvaro Morata from Real Madrid. As revealed by Telegraph Sport last week, Morata has agreed a deal to join United and the Old Trafford club are now in talks with Real over the fee. United had hoped to pay around £60m for Morata, but Real want closer to £70m. A compromise is expected to be agreed that allows the transfer to go through.
On United’s move for Morata, the Spaniard’s agent, Juanma López, said: “It's a club with a lot charm, a very interesting option. I can say that there's a very important offer and the decision now rests with Real. I cannot tell [if an agreement is close], we'll see.”
