Monaco have rejected a £44.5m Manchester City bid for left-back Benjamin Mendy.

City are targeting Mendy as their latest big-money full-back after spending more than £50m to make Kyle Walker football's most expensive defender.

But sources last week told Sky Sports News Monaco also value their player at more than £50m, and City's latest offer has been dismissed.

Mendy won the French title in his first season with Monaco last year and also helped Leonardo Jardim's side reach the last four of the Champions League.

The 23-year-old hinted at a move to the Premier League last week when he posted an Instagram picture of himself in Union Jack shorts, accompanied by the caption: "See you soon."

City are in the market for a left-back following Gael Clichy's departure, although imminent new £26.5m signing Danilo has played there for Real Madrid.

Manchester City are expected to take their summer spending to almost £220 million in the next 48 hours as they prepare to wrap up deals for full-backs Danilo and Benjamin Mendy in the latest stage of their drastic defensive overhaul.

And Pep Guardiola – who remains hot on the heels of Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez – also wants to sign a centre half with Alexandar Kolarov on the verge of a £5.8 million move to Roma after asking to leave City.

Guardiola had planned on Kolarov staying but his impending departure means all four of City’s full-backs last season will have been cleared out in the space of a month in a situation that raises fresh questions about the absence of succession planning by director of football Txiki Begiristain.

Kolarov had been expected to provide cover in central defence as well as left-back but his request to join Roma will force Guardiola back into the market for a centre-back to compete with Vincent Kompany, Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones.

City have already missed out on Italy defender, Leonardo Bonucci, who has left Juventus for AC Milan.

Kolarov follows Pablo Zabaleta, Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy out of the door, heightening the pressure on City to find a glut of reinforcements in a single summer.

City are confident of completing the £26.8 million signing of Danilo in the next 24 hours, with the Brazil right back expected to leave Real Madrid’s UCLA training base in Los Angeles to make the short journey across the city to join up with City and undergo a medical. City arrived in LA on Friday after a 2-0 defeat by derby rivals Manchester United in Houston. Danilo, for whom Chelsea have also made an offer, will provide cover at left back as well as defensive midfield.

City are also close to finally completing a protracted deal for Mendy for a fee in excess of £50 million after making a fourth offer for the Monaco and France left back following weeks of failed negotiations to drive the price down. City are one of the clubs Monaco are believed to be considering reporting to Fifa over allegations of tapping-up striker Kylian Mbappe, although the world governing body had still to receive a formal complaint from the French champions as of Friday afternoon.

Benjamin Mendy: Man City agree £52m deal for Monaco left-back

Manchester City have agreed a £52m deal for Monaco defender Benjamin Mendy.

The 23-year-old France left-back, who joined Monaco from Marseille last summer, played 34 times for the club last season and helped them to their first Ligue 1 title in 17 years.

His fee would eclipse the initial £45m paid by City for right-back Kyle Walker earlier this month and the £47.5m deal for centre-back John Stones last summer.

City have not yet confirmed the deal.

Mendy would become the Premier League club's fourth major signing of the summer and take their spending to more than £175m, following the recruitment of England international Walker, Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva (£43m) and Brazilian keeper Ederson Moraes (£35m).

City are also interested in Real Madrid's 26-year-old Brazil right-back Danilo.

Before Thursday's pre-season game against Manchester United in Houston, manager Pep Guardiola said the club were talking to "three or four" more players.

"They are young players, with the next three, four, five years in mind," the Spaniard added.

"We have options for players coming but until the deal is done, out of respect for the other clubs, I cannot say anything."
