Adrian Mutu banned for life from Romania squad after late night drinking anticsFormer Chelsea forward has been expelled from playing for the national team after being caught drinking before a game
Cesena striker Adrian Mutu has been banned permanently from appearing for the Romania national team after a night of drinking before their friendly against San Marino.
And the same goes for West Bromwich Albion defender Gabriel Tamas who was with Mutu during their late night binge.Romania beat San Marino 1-0 in their friendly match on Wednesday, but both players were excluded from the squad before kick-off after allegations in the Romanian press suggested they had spent Monday night out on a pub crawl.
After the game, Romania coach Victor Piturca explained his reasons for the punishment.
"The two players have been expelled for life from the national team," Piturca is quoted as saying on AFP.
"It's a pity but rules are strict and they should have known it."
Mutu responded and told local media in Romania he acknowledged the coach's choices regarding his future.
"We understand Piturca's decision."
It's not the first time Mutu has landed himself in trouble. In 2004 he was sacked by Chelsea for taking cocaine.
And last year his former club Fiorentina banned him for nine months after failing a doping test.
