BORO hope to sign former England defender Jonathan Woodgate, subject to a medical.

The classy 32-year-old centre-half is a free agent after being with Premier League Stoke City last season.
Middlesbrough-born Woodgate first joined Boro in a £7m deal in 2007 after a succesful spell on loan from Real Madrid.
He played 46 league games for the club before moving on to Spurs in January 2008.
Woodgate began his career with Leeds United and has also had spells with Newcastle United.

Jonathan Woodgate set to sign for Middlesbrough

Jonathan Woodgate is to return to Middlesbrough from Stoke City on a free transfer.

The defender is due to have a medical at The Riverside but contract talks are yet to be concluded, BBC Tees reports.

The 32-year-old left Boro for Tottenham in an £8m deal four and a half years ago, having joined the club from Real Madrid for £7m in August 2006.

He won eight England caps between 1999 and 2008, the last coming in a 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic.

Middlesbrough-born Woodgate's career has been dogged by injuries which have seen him play just 329 games in a professional career that began at Leeds United in 1998.

He left Leeds for Newcastle United in January 2003 in a £9m deal before signing for Real Madrid for £13.4m in August the following year.

But injuries took their toll and he made just 12 appearances in almost three years at the Bernabeu and spent the final season of his time at Real on loan at Middlesbrough before joining his hometown club permanently.
