Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma is due to have talks on Wednesday with Stoke and West Brom about a potential loan move, according to Sky sources.

The 22-year-old missed almost a year of football after picking up an anterior cruciate ligament injury in February 2016.

Blues boss Antonio Conte thinks he will benefit from going out on loan after playing 13 times last season.

Zouma joined Chelsea from Saint-Etienne in January 2014 but remained on loan at the French side for the remainder of the campaign.

Zouma was out of first-team action for 11 months after sustaining the anterior cruciate ligament injury against Manchester United but returned as Chelsea won the Premier League title again under Conte.

Stoke City have emerged as favourites to sign Kurt Zouma on a season-long loan once the central defender has penned a new Chelsea contract.

Zouma is poised to sign a new four-year contract with the Blues before heading out on loan for the forthcoming campaign.

West Bromwich Albion and a host of foreign clubs have shown an interest in Zouma, but Stoke are expected to agree a deal for the 22-year-old that would see them cover his Chelsea wages.

Chelsea allowed Zouma to miss pre-season training on Wednesday while he attempted to finalise his loan move.

Zouma remains highly rated at Chelsea, but will struggle to start regularly under head coach Antonio Conte after the signing of Antonio Rudiger and the decision to bring Andreas Christensen back.

Having missed nine months following a serious knee injury, both Zouma and Chelsea agree that he needs to play regular games to recover his best form. Zouma is also keen to try to fight his way back into the France squad in time for next summer’s World Cup after missing last year’s European Championships in his home country.

Securing Zouma to a long-term contract means that Chelsea will have the option of bringing him back to the club or demanding a big fee for him if he is a success at Stoke.

STOKE FAVOURITES FOR ZOUMA

Stoke are leading the chase to sign Kurt Zouma on loan from Chelsea, according to Sky sources.

We understand Zouma will sign a new Chelsea contract and be loaned out immediately.

Stoke are offering to pay his wages for the season having held talks over the move today.

Around 20 clubs have expressed an interest in taking Zouma on loan.

HUGHES 'VERY HOPEFUL' ON ZOUMA

Stoke manager Mark Hughes has confirmed his interest in signing Kurt Zouma and is "very hopeful" about agreeing a loan deal for the Chelsea defender.

"There is genuine interest. We'd like to make it happen if we can," Hughes told the Sentinel. "The boy himself has to make a decision.

"We are one of many interested parties but we're very hopeful. We're still doing a number of deals."
