Everton continue summer transfer spree with signing of full-back Cuco Martina Chris Bascombe

Everton summer recruitment drive shows no sign of slowing down with full-back Cuco Martina the latest addition to Ronald Koeman’s squad. Martina will complete the formalities of a free transfer from Southampton this weekend.The 27 year-old will provide cover in defence, Koeman short of options as Seamus Coleman recovers from the broken leg he suffered on international duty last year. Martina’s arrival ends a year-long pursuit, Koeman first making a move for the Dutchman shortly after he was appointed at Goodison Park.
Koeman has already swelled his ranks considerably in the last two months and Martina joins Wayne Rooney, Davy Klaassen, Michael Keane, Jordan Pickford, Sandro Ramirez and Henry Onyekuru in a revamped squad.
There are likely to be more to come, especially as Koeman wants to add Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson before the start of this season.
Everton have sold Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United for a fee which could yet rise to £90 million, and speculation regarding Ross Barkley shows no sign of diminishing.
The England midfielder was a notable absentee when the side left for a pre-season friendly in Tanzania, which takes place on Thursday.
Everton insisted Barkley’s non-inclusion is due to a groin injury, but they took others who are not fit, such as Yannick Bolasie.
That merely adds to the intrigue surrounding Barkley who was warned by Koeman he would not be part of his plans this season if he failed to sign a new deal in May.
That deadline passed and the Dutch coach is not usually one for compromise, especially having been so public in his warning to the England international.
Barkley has been training at Finch Farm as usual but matters are coming to a head, the 23 year-old seemingly out of favour unless he puts pen to paper imminently.
With so much competition for midfield places following Koeman’s spending spree, the youngster has much to consider while his team mates are away - particularly as he tries to force his way into the England squad in a World Cup year.
