Michael Carrick says he will retire if his 11-year stay at Manchester United is not extended.The 35-year-old midfielder, who has announced details of his testimonial, revealed that he is yet to speak to United manager Jose Mourinho about a new contract.‘I haven’t had much of a conversation with him,’ said Carrick. ‘Obviously that will happen at some stage, pretty soon I’d have thought. That’s something I’m really relaxed about.’ Carrick, whose deal expires at the end of the season, has played 443 matches and scored 24 goals for United since he signed from Tottenham for £18.6million in 2006.
He has won five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup during his time at the Old Trafford, and he admitted it would be tough to play elsewhere.
‘I don’t think there’s many places I’d want to play, if any, after this anyway,’ Carrick said. ‘I’ve had such a time here that I don’t think I would go elsewhere.’
Carrick, who came on at half-time in Sunday’s EFL Cup win at Wembley, added that he had sought advice from former teammates over when to retire.
‘You know in yourself,’ he said. ‘There’s pride as well. Gary Neville is probably the obvious one. He stopped halfway through the season. He said, “You know what, that’s it, I can’t do it now,” which you have got to respect.
'That’s the pride element of knowing how good you are at your peak and as that steady decline comes it’s not letting it go too far. I don’t want to be hanging around too long just for the sake of it.
‘I feel really good to be honest. It’s a good place to be at the moment, real positivity around the place and hopefully we can achieve more success this season.’
The testimonial will see a United 2008 XI take on a Michael Carrick All-Stars team at Old Trafford on June 4, with the newly-created Michael Carrick Foundation to decide which causes benefit.
The confirmed list of players for the United team includes Edwin van der Sar, Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, while the All-Stars will have Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Michael Owen.
Carlos Tevez, who acrimoniously departed Old Trafford to join City, was a key player in 2008 and Carrick did approach him about playing.
‘He’s in China,’ Carrick said. ‘He would have loved to have played, but didn’t know where he would be!’
