Jermain Defoe has opened talks with Bournemouth over a move to the south coast club., according to Sky sources.

The England striker has a clause in his contract which means he can move for free following Sunderland's relegation to the Sky Bet Championship, and the Cherries held initial talks with Defoe's representatives on Monday with a deal expected to be completed within the next few days following formal talks with the player himself.

Defoe has scored 34 Premier League goals for Sunderland since arriving from MLS side Toronto in January 2015 in a deal worth £6m.

The 34-year-old's 15 top-flight goals this season have not been enough to keep Sunderland from the drop though, with Bournemouth and West Ham having been interested in signing Defoe since the Black Cats' relegation was confirmed, according to Sky sources.

Defoe was not included in Sunderland's squad for their final game of the Premier League campaign against Chelsea on Sunday, which proved to be David Moyes' last match in charge of the club following his resignation on Monday.

Moyes spoke of his disappointment at Defoe's relegation clause earlier this month, indicating he would not have allowed it to be part of the transfer had he been manager at the time.

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe is closing in on a three-year-deal at Bournemouth that will see him earn over £100,000 a week.
The 34-year-old has a clause in his current deal which allows him to leave Sunderland on a free transfer after their relegation to the Championship.
And Sportsmail now understands Eddie Howe has convinced Defoe that a move to the south coast would be beneficial for both parties.
Defoe held talks with the Cherries on Monday and has agreed to play for the club, assuming he completes a medical in the coming days.
The move will see England striker Defoe earn over £6million a year - a wage he will feel he has earned after scoring 15 top flight goals last season.
Before talks began with Bournemouth, Crystal Palace are believed to have shown an interest, but uncertainty in south London put paid to that.
West Ham were another club said to be keen on the veteran centre-forward, but they instead moved their focus to other targets ahead of the summer.
Defoe has previously played at Bournemouth, during a successful loan spell in the early stages of his career.
He scored an impressive 19 league goals, including 12 in 10 consecutive games.

Sky Sports News HQ understands Defoe has agreed a three-year deal, worth £65,000-a-week, and will undergo a medical ahead of his return to Bournemouth, where he spent a successful six months on loan early in his career.

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe says his move to Bournemouth is going ahead and he has had a medical with the Premier League side.

The England international, 34, joined the Black Cats in January 2015, scoring 15 league goals this season before they were relegated to the Championship.

A teenage Defoe spent the 2000-01 season on loan at Bournemouth from West Ham, scoring in 10 successive matches.

Asked whether the move was definitely happening, Defoe said: "Well, yeah."

Defoe is in the England squad for the World Cup qualifier against Scotland on Saturday and a friendly against France three days later.

"It's out there, a lot of people obviously knew," he said. "I did a medical and said when this is finished and I've had a break, come July everyone will know anyway."

Bournemouth are set to confirm the big-money signing of Jermain Defoe on Saturday.
There have been suggestions that the Sunderland striker’s expensive financial package could prove a late obstacle to the deal, but Sportsmail understands the move will be wrapped up at the weekend.
The England international, who turns 35 in October, will pocket in the region of £20m from the combination of his wages across a three-year deal and also a hefty signing-on fee.
He confirmed on international duty earlier this month that he had already undertaken his medical at the club where he spent the 2000-01 season on loan from West Ham.

Bournemouth will also complete a deal for out-of-contract winger Connor Mahoney, 20.
The former England Under 18 international made 18 appearances for Blackburn Rovers last season and had been pursued by Nottingham Forest. As Mahoney is under the age of 24, Bournemouth must agree compensation with Blackburn.
Eddie Howe remains keen to secure the return of Nathan Ake from Chelsea after he excelled at the club on loan in the first half of last season.
