Bournemouth are increasingly confident they are close to agreeing a deal to sign Nathan Ake from Chelsea.

The Cherries face competition from other clubs, such as Leicester City and Southampton, who are also interested in signing the 22-year-old defender.

Ake, who is expected to cost at least £20m, spent the first half of last season on loan at Bournemouth before being recalled in January.

Bournemouth made a bid to sign Ake at the end of the January transfer window but were rebuffed by Chelsea.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe said at the time: "We had discussions with Chelsea. The bid that has been reported in the media was miles off the mark.

"We made an enquiry about the opportunity of bringing him back on loan or on a permanent deal, but that was declined."

Ake, who made his international debut for Holland against Morocco in March, has previously been on loan with Watford and Reading.

Bournemouth are increasingly confident that they are close to agreeing a deal to sign Chelsea defender Nathan Ake, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports News HQ understands Southampton and Leicester are also interested in signing the 22-year-old centre-back.

Ake, valued in the region of £20m, spent the first of last season on loan at Bournemouth before being recalled in January.

Bournemouth are close to completing the £20 million club record  signing of Nathan Ake from Chelsea and are also poised to confirm Jermain Defoe’s return on a free transfer.

Including wages, the two deals will cost Bournemouth well in excess of £50 million and also follow the signing of goalkeeper Asmir Begovic from Chelsea this summer.

It is the permanent arrival of Ake, however, that is most eye-catching and perhaps sends the strongest signal both of the club’s ambition and Eddie Howe’s ability to attract players.

Ake was on loan at Bournemouth until January last season when Chelsea turned down both the suggestion of a permanent transfer or an extension of the loan.

Ake wanted the chance at Chelsea of first-team football but his only Premier League start was against Watford when the title was already confirmed.

The 22-year-old will now commit to a five-year deal at Bournemouth despite the interest of both Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion.

Aké joined Chelsea from Feyenoord at the age of 16 and, given his obvious quality, his departure again underlines the difficulty for young players of breaking into the first team at Stamford Bridge.

CHELSEA WANT AKE BUY-BACK CLAUSE

Chelsea are expected to have the option of re-signing Nathan Ake once the defender completes a switch to Bournemouth.

The 22-year-old Holland international was recalled from loan at Bournemouth in January by Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte.

But now the Chelsea boss is willing to accede to Ake's request to play regularly, with the Cherries hoping to complete a deal.

The fee for Ake, who can play in central defence, at left-back or midfield, is reportedly £20m and includes a buy-back clause.

Bournemouth have signed Netherlands defender Nathan Ake for a reported £20m from Premier League champions Chelsea.

Ake, 22, joined the Cherries on loan in June 2016, and scored three goals in 12 games before being recalled by the Blues in January, but made just five appearances for Antonio Conte's side.

He joined Chelsea in 2012 and spent the 2015-16 season on loan at Watford.

Ake becomes Bournemouth's third summer signing after striker Jermain Defoe and keeper Asmir Begovic.

He made his Netherlands debut in a friendly against Morocco in June.
