DEFENDER David Wheater has joined Bolton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee, but he leaves Boro with a glowing reference from Tony Mowbray.



Wheater has signed a three-and-a-half year contract with Bolton and trained with his new team-mates today.

Boro boss Mowbray admitted to having mixed emotions as the long-running transfer saga came to an end.

"I'm disappointed for the club, he's been a very important player for us, but we do need to put ourselves back on a sound financial footing to build and push forward from," he said.

"David's contractual situation was the main reason why he's gone.

"We endeavoured to see if he would put pen to paper on a new deal but that wasn't going to come to fruition. We've got some money back in and we wish David well."

The 23-year-old made 140 league appearances for Boro, scoring nine goals.

Born in Redcar, Wheater won the FA Youth Cup with Boro in 2004 and made his league debut during the 2005/06 season.

He won a number of awards during his time with Boro, including being named Community Player of the Year three times thanks to his willingness to support the club's off the field activities.

He is also a former recipient of the North East Football Writers Player of the Year award.

"He seemed unaffected by the goldfish bowl of professional football," said Mowbray. "He's a hard-working, conscientious young guy doing his best for his football team.

"As he said to me when he shook my hand when he left, he told me he would like to have played for the Boro for the rest of his life.

"But we find ourselves in the Championship and he feels the Premier League is where he wants to play."

Meanwhile, Wheater spoke to Bolton's official website on his arrival at the club's Euxton training ground.

"I met with the manager and we had a good chat about football," he said.

"I had a look around the facilities and it was a really easy decision to make. From what I've seen there is a really great atmosphere at the club and a real buzz about the place and I'm looking forward to working hard and showing the manager what I can do."

簽wheater即係bolton已做好失去g.cahill嘅準備了.....

boro冇埋wheater..... 都幾慘..... 不過要留級都應該ok嘅, 後面幾隊暫時好似都冇咩起色咁.

DAVID Wheater has paid tribute to the Boro faithful for their support during his protracted move to Bolton.

As revealed exclusively on www.gazettelive.co.uk last night, the 23-year-old centre-back has penned a three-and-half-year deal with Wanderers.

He passed a medical yesterday afternoon and was set to train with his new team-mates today. The fee is understood to be an initial £2m rising to £3m.

Wheater then picked up the phone and contacted the Gazette to pass on his thanks to the Boro fans.

“The supporters have been brilliant with me,” he said. “I think they understand why I had to leave to further my career and they also know that the club would benefit financially, the money will help the manager strengthen the team.

“I could have stayed until the end of the season but then Boro would have received nothing for me.

“Boro have got some money now and I hope that helps the club move forward.

It was always going to be hard to leave,” added Wheater, who has a special rapport with the Riverside regulars, who sang “he’s one of our own” in tribute to the Redcar-born Academy graduate.

“I’ve been at Boro since I was 10 years old, and all my family and friends are up here. It’s been one of the toughest decisions of my life.

“I always said I would stay at Boro but football is my job and you have to do what’s best for your career. I’ll be back regularly, though. I’ve still got my box at the Riverside and I’ll be back on Saturday for the Preston game supporting the lads. Boro will always have a place in my heart and I’ll be keeping my house in Redcar.

“Tony Mowbray wished me all the best,” he added. “Since day one when he arrived at Boro we have had a special bond and I believe he will be a success.”

Wheater confirmed he left Boro because he wanted to play Premier League football again and eventually win an England call-up.

“I’m really happy with how it’s turned out,” he said.

“I’m over the moon to be joining Bolton and playing for Owen Coyle. I did think at one point it wasn’t going to happen. It looked like Boro wanted a bit more than Bolton wanted to pay but it’s all sorted now. From my point of view, it was too good an opportunity to miss.

“Playing in the Championship you are not going to get into the England team,” he added.

“Owen Coyle took me on because he believes I have the potential to get into the England team. He said what a good player I am and that I can get even better.”

Wheater made 140 league appearances for Boro, winning an England call-up in 2008.

He could well make his Bolton debut in Monday’s clash with Chelsea at the Reebok.

其實最近英甲球隊bournemouth個領隊亦都係另一個有情有義嘅故事....

我講嘅人係eddie howe - 前bournemouth領隊.

佢從小就係bournemouth球迷. 後來仲成為bournemouth球員. 2006年12月, 佢因為嚴重膝傷, 被迫以29歲之齡退休, 轉任球隊嘅coach, 然後就升任為reserve team領隊. 再之後, 佢就成為球隊嘅看守領隊, 任內2場都敗北. 2009年1月, 佢接任為球隊領隊, 當時31歲. 嗰時, 球隊得7分排league two嘅尾二 (本來24分, 不過因為enter administration被扣17分). 結果佢正式上任嘅21場入面只輸6場, 帶領球隊以9分之差成功護級.

09-10球季, 因為球隊被禁買人嘅關係(上季entered administration), 只能以原班一馬應戰. 結果竟然係4月就宣布升班, 最後亦以10分之距得到直接升班嘅資格.

至於今季, 開季嘅時候一個正選前鋒俾英冠bristol city買左, 一個就喺11月俾英冠millwall先借後買. 喺冇晒一對正箭頭, 被一致睇淡嘅情況下, howe竟然又帶領球隊排緊聯賽第二. 如果佢可以帶領球隊連升兩次班, 就會超越harry redknapp成為球隊歷史上最成功嘅領隊.

暑假同季初, 佢曾經直言, 收到唔少其他球隊嘅offer. 不過佢亦都話, 佢嘅球員同埋支持球隊嘅球迷係佢留低嘅理由. 講真, 好似wheater咁, 接受一個更好嘅條件, 教更好嘅球隊, 機會好早之前就有, 而且如果佢accept左, 大家都會理解, 都唔會怪佢. 而且佢手下嘅主將一個一個被賣, 球隊亦依然陷入財困, 佢自己又年輕有為, 實在有好多"出外闖"嘅理由. 不過因為作為fans, 熱愛球會, 所以留低. 呢種忠誠真係令人感動. 特別係fan --> player --> coach --> manager呢個流程..... 真係好多fans嘅夢想, 佢實現到之後又唔會忘本, 真係

同wheater一樣, 呢個1月, 佢帶領左bournemouth第100場之後終於都係要離開了, 去左burnley教. 我好希望佢可以成功.
