Liverpool will sell Mamadou Sakho next monthKlopp confirms that Frenchman is not part of his plans
Mamadou Sakho’s Liverpool career is over. The France international will be sold when the transfer window opens next month.Sakho hasn’t played for the Reds since April due to a number of disciplinary issues and has no future under Jurgen Klopp. The manager said on Friday that there was “absolutely no thought to sell any player from the first-team squad” in January, but that vow didn’t include Sakho.
The 26-year-old defender hasn’t been part of the senior set-up since he returned to fitness in September - having spent the last three months training with Liverpool Under-23s at the Kirkby Academy.
“Nothing has changed,” Klopp said.
“He is not in these plans for the first team. The first team squad is here (at Melwood). You know all this.”
Sakho is under contract until 2020 and Liverpool will hope to recoup a large chunk of the £18million they paid Paris Saint-Germain for him three years ago.West Brom and Stoke City have previously pursued the defender and are expected to rekindle their interest. It’s been a dramatic fall from grace for Sakho, who enjoyed cult hero status on the Kop.
Back in April, he was accused by UEFA of failing a drugs test. A damaging three-month saga ended with him being cleared, but only after he had missed the Europa League final and Euro 2016 in his homeland as he served a provisional ban.
The former PSG captain was then sent home from the pre-season tour of America by Klopp for repeatedly breaking club rules. He was late for the team flight, late for a team meal and failed to turn up to a treatment session on an Achilles injury with Klopp accusing him of showing a lack of respect.
Towards the end of August, Klopp urged him to go out on loan but Sakho ignored that advice, rejecting approaches from the likes of Stoke, West Brom and Besiktas.
Sakho believed he could still force his way into Klopp’s plans but those hopes lie in tatters.
He further infuriated Klopp in September with a late night outburst on social media when he bemoaned “the lies” over his absence.
The only football Sakho has played this season has been for Liverpool Under-23s and he now accepts that he has to move on in order to salvage his career.
