Chelsea in talks to sign Mateo Kovacic from Real Madrid



Chelsea are in talks to sign Mateo Kovacic, the Real Madrid midfielder, after he told the Spanish club today that he wants to leave.
The 24-year-old Croatia international is keen to play more regularly than he does for Real but the club do not want to sell him because he is a good deputy for 32-year-old Luka Modric.
Real have Kovacic in mind for a larger role in the future and a loan move has been mooted. However, Modric is wanted by Inter Milan, which complicates the situation.

Thibaut Courtois will not be at Chelsea training today and has been asked to attend a meeting with the club tomorrow. The west London club are resigned to the Belgium goalkeeper leaving and have been exploring various alternatives including Kepa Arrizabalaga, of Athletic Bilbao, and Jack Butland, of Stoke. Kepa has represented Spain at every age group and helped them win the 2012 Uefa European Under-21 championship.

CHELSEA EYE UP COURTOIS REPLACMENTS

Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa Arrizabalaga is a goalkeeper target for Chelsea, Sky Sports News understands.

With the Blues resigned to losing Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid before the deadline after he missed training for a second day today, the club are focusing their attentions on securing his replacement.

Stoke’s Jack Butland remains their first choice because of the nature of the deal, according to Sky sources, which is expected to cost them £30m if they can act quickly - but that price will rise the close to the deadline it becomes.

Arrizabalaga would cost Chelsea much more, and a fee of around £70m would make him the most expensive goalkeeper in the world - eclipsing Alisson only weeks after the Brazilian joined Liverpool.

Maurizio Sarri would also like to go for Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak, but his £89m release clause is a stumbling block.

Courtois confident his absence will get him what he wants with Real prepared to send Kovacic to Chelsea and the club investigating whether Kepa could replace him. £71m release clause the obvious hurdle. Butland and Rico still in frame for now.

CHELSEA OFFERED KOVACIC

Real Madrid have offered Chelsea Mateo Kovacic on loan in order to persuade them to sell Thibaut Courtois, say Sky sources.

Croatian midfielder Kovacic has been told he can leave Madrid this summer. They are prepared to let him join Chelsea on a season-long loan.

Chelsea will not let Courtois go until they find a replacement.

Thibaut Courtois is confident his refusal to return to Chelsea will be rewarded with a move to Real Madrid after the goalkeeper extended his absence into a second day.

And his hopes of a transfer being concluded have been boosted by the possibility of a deal being sweetened by Real midfielder Mateo Kovacic being allowed to move in the opposite direction on loan.

As exclusively revealed by Telegraph Sport, Courtois attempted to force through his move to Real Madrid by going AWOL on Monday and the Belgian also failed to appear on Tuesday.

Chelsea have contacted Courtois to request that he returns on Wednesday to explain his absence, but, so far, there has been no indication that he plans to do so.

Sources expect Courtois to fail to report once again as he waits to find out whether or not Chelsea accept Real’s £35million offer.

Real are prepared to allow wantaway Kovacic, who himself skipped a training session with the Spanish club, to join Chelsea on a season-long loan on the proviso they get Courtois.

Chelsea are actively working on securing a replacement for Courtois ahead of Thursday’s Premier League transfer deadline, checking on Kepa Arrizabalaga whose Athletic Bilbao buy-out clause stands at £71million.

Stoke City’s Jack Butland and Sevilla’s Sergio Rico are also high on Cheslea’s list of targets. Both goalkeepers would be significantly cheaper than Kepa.

Taking Kovacic on loan, rather than signing a different midfielder permanently, may persuade Chelsea to spend more money on a goalkeeper than they would have otherwise done.

Chelsea’s first-choice replacement for Courtois, Alisson Becker, became the world’s most expensive goalkeeper when he joined Liverpool for £66.8m in July and the Blues would have to eclipse that fee to land Kepa.

The situation of Courtois has echoes of Diego Costa’s decision to go on strike to force through his move to Atletico Madrid and the pair remain good friends.
