Magic Hire Jacque Vaughn As Head Coach Jul 28, 2012 11:04 AM EDT The Magic have hired Jacque Vaughn to become their next head coach. A press conference will be held on Monday. Vaughn spent the past two seasons as an assistant with the Spurs and will repace Stan Van Gundy. Vaughn had the same duties as the team's top three assistant coaches: Mike Budenholzer, Don Newman and Brett Brown, but he sat behind the bench as NBA rules allow only three assistants on the bench during games. General manager Rob Hennigan and Vaughn are familiar with each other from their time with the Spurs.

Wolves Hope Derrick Williams Feels Challenged By Kirilenko Signing

David Kahn acknowledged that Derrick Williams will have to improve his play in order to receive more playing time in his second season.

The Wolves signed Andrei Kirilenko, which will certainly impact the minutes he could have otherwise received.

"I think it challenges Derrick to seize the moment," Kahn said. "I think that, otherwise, Derrick probably would have been in a situation where he would have felt the minutes would just have been handed to him. I think in this environment, Derrick should feel challenged, and I hope he accepts the challenge to seize what he wants as opposed to it just being handed to him. There are no limitations on Derrick's ability to play here, from a minutes standpoint."

Harden Open To Signing With Suns

James Harden will consider signing with the Suns if his contract expires after next season.

"Yeah," he said. "Of course. I love it there. My mom lives there still. So that's definitely my second home as far as my comfort level and going to school there. But obviously, I'm with the Thunder right now and what we have is special."

Oklahoma City will be able to match any offer Harden receives.

"That's out of my hands," Harden said. "That's not my decision. That's the front office. I'll let them decide that."

Ronnie Brewer is likely to start at shooting guard ahead of J.R. Smith.

Brewer is considered a plus-defender who can guard multiple positions.

"A lot of people want to play defense but some people just don't have the ability to do it," the 6-7 veteran said. "... I take pride in defense and, in my opinion, I think defense wins championships."

Brewer turned down more lucrative deals elsewhere to play for the Knicks.

"It didn't come down to money," said Brewer, who believes the Knicks have enough talent to compete against the Heat. "It's where you want to go and where you feel comfortable."

The Philadelphia 76ers have signed free agent Royal Ivey.

Ivey (6-4, 215) was originally the 37th overall pick by Atlanta in the 2004 NBA Draft. In eight seasons, he has appeared in 437 games with 109 starts, averaging 3.4 points, 1.1 assists and 1.1 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game.

The Sixers first signed Ivey as a free agent on July 28, 2008.

Ivey has spent the past two seasons with the Thunder.

Atlanta Hawks: Hawks trade Willie Green for rights to Greek center Schortsanitis

Hawks GM Danny Ferry gained some more of the financial flexibility he covets by sending Willie Green to the Clippers in a sign-and-trade for the rights to Greek center Sofoklis Schortsanitis.

Schortsanitis signed a three-year contract with Athens club Panathinaikos earlier this month so chances are he won't be joining Atlanta's roster. The value for the Hawks in the deal is gaining a trade exception in the amount of Green's first-year salary with the Clippers, which wasn't immediately known.

A trade exception works as a sort of credit that would allow the Hawks to make a trade while over the salary cap without meeting the usual salary-matching requirements. The credit expires one year from the date of the trade.

The Clippers selected Schortsanitis in the second round of the 2003 draft. He was listed at 6-9 and 345 pounds while playing for the Clippers' summer league entry in 2010. Schortsanitis played for Olympiacos and Maccabi before joining Panathinaikos.

Green signed with the Hawks before last season and went on to post a career-best year in scoring efficiency. His 1.04 points scored per possession (on 395 possessions used) ranked 24th in the league, according to Synergy Sports Technology.

Like pretty much every key Hawks reserve, Green struggled to score in the playoffs against the Celtics. In addition, Green's defensive weaknesses–too slow to handle quicker opponents, too small to check bigger foes–were magnified during that series.

Carl Landry Signs Two-Year, $8M Deal With Warriors

Carl Landy and the Warriors have reached agreement on a two-year, $8 million deal.

Landry signed a one-year deal with the Hornets last offseason.

Landry will presumably backup David Lee at the power forward position.

Sonny Weems Signs With CSKA Moscow

Sonny Weems has agreed to a three-year deal with CSKA Moscow.

Weems played last season for Zalgiris Kaunas, where he averaged 15.5 points and 5 rebounds in 15 Euroleague games.
