Marseille have announced that they have agreed a deal to sign former Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby.

The 29-year-old was released by Arsenal at the end of last season after nine years at the London club in which his progress was severely hampered by injuries.

He was offered the chance to stay in the Premier League with West Brom but turned down a move to The Hawthorns.

Instead he will be heading back to France after playing only two games in the last two seasons for Arsenal.

"Olympique de Marseille and Abou Diaby have this Tuesday evening reached an agreement in principle for the international midfielder to join the club," Marseille said on their website.

The 29-year-old joined Arsenal from French club Auxerre in 2006 but his last match for the Gunners was September 2014.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted he has "enormous respect" for Diaby but added: "Each time he came back, we had to start again from zero because of another injury.

"He is not a player who is fragile but just a victim of a violent tackle which went unpunished."

West Bromwich Albion are in talks with free agent Abou Diaby after the injury-hit midfielder’s release from Arsenal.

Diaby is still only 29 but a succession of set-backs saw him exit the Emirates at the end of his contract.

Albion boss Tony Pulis is back at the club’s Walsall training ground today and is heading talks with the Paris-born midfielder.

Any deal would be similar to Albion’s quest to sign Owen Hargreaves four years ago.

Albion feel they have the right faciilities, medical science and staff to get the best out of Diaby who, if fit, would represent a magnificent acquisition.

Hargreaves was a free agent at the age of 30 when Roy Hodgson and Dan Ashworth held talks with him only for the Canadian-born England international to opt for a move to Manchester City.

Diaby, who stands 6’4” tall, moved to Arsenal from Auxerre in 2006 for around £2 million.

He left on 1st July after making 180 first-team appearances, scoring 19 goals.

A statement on the Gunners’ web-site read: “A hugely talented midfielder, unfortunately his time at the club was interrupted by a number of serious injuries.”

Diaby represented France on 16 occasions.

Abou Diaby set to undergo a medical with West Brom

Former Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby is set to undergo a medical with West Brom this weekend, according to Sky sources.

The Frenchman is a free agent after he was released by Arsenal during the summer following a succession of injury-ravaged seasons with the Gunners, with the 29-year-old suffering from as many as 40 separate injuries during nine years with the club.

The France international played 124 games for Arsenal in that time but was restricted to just one first-team appearance last term, against Southampton in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

Diaby moved to north London from Auxerre in 2006 and was the longest-serving player in the Arsenal squad.

Despite his injury woes, Diaby flashed prodigious talent for the Gunners and Albion boss Tony Pulis wants to assess if he is capable of offering something to the Baggies this season.

Elsewhere, West Brom remain in talks with Liverpool over England striker Rickie Lambert, whose future at Anfield is in doubt following the arrival of Christian Benteke for £32.5m.

The Baggies also remain interested in Borussia Dortmund’s Columbian striker Adrian Ramos, according to Sky sources.

DIABY HAVING WBA MEDICAL

Sky sources: Former Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby is currently having a medical at West Bromwich Albion, and the type of deal the Frenchman will receive will depend on those results.

Diaby, who has had an injury-ravaged career, playing just 22 games in the last four years at Arsenal.

'DIABY COULD PLAY 30 LEAGUE GAMES'

Tony Pulis has revealed West Brom’s medical staff are confident they could significantly improve Abou Diaby's fitness hopes if he opted to move to The Hawthorns.

Pulis confirmed the former Arsenal midfielder had undergone a medical at Albion's training ground on Friday and that, were he to move to Albion, Diaby could keep fit for the entirety of the Premier League season.

"Diaby came in, he had his medical yesterday. We've made him an offer and we shall see,” Pulis said.

"The big thing with Abou is getting him fit and having the confidence from the medical team to do that.

"He is a top player and I mean he is a top, top player. We've had a look and we think there are things he can do to improve his chances of playing 30 Premier League games and we're confident we can help him do that.

“Whether he accepts that and the ethos of the football club we'll wait and see."

Abou Diaby rejects West Brom in favour of return to France

Former Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby has rejected an offer to join West Bromwich Albion in favour of finding a new club in France.

West Brom head coach Tony Pulis confirmed last week the club had offered Diaby a chance to stay in the Premier League.

But Diaby, who is currently a free agent after being released by Arsenal earlier this summer, has turned down a move to the Hawthorns.

The 29-year-old spent nine years at Arsenal after joining from French club Auxerre in 2006, but made just two appearances over the past two seasons of an injury-plagued career.

Pulis believed West Brom could be the solution to Diaby's injury problems, saying: "We've had a look and we think there are things he can do to improve his chances of playing 30 Premier League games and we're confident we can help him do that.”

But Diaby, whose last of 16 international caps for France came in September 2012, wants to return to his home country to rebuild his career.  

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has described his former player as the "biggest regret of my career".

"He is a guy who has been severely injured and it is not acceptable, we have paid the price for that but I hope things turn around for him and they go well," said the Frenchman.
