Watford are confident of doing a loan deal for Fiorentina striker Mauro Zarate. And that is a clear sign that Watford are determined to back Walter Mazzarri through their worrying slump in form. Argentinian Zarate, 29, had a spell at West Ham and is now struggling to hold down a place at Fiorentina which has alerted Watford. They are set to agree a loan deal with a view to make it permanent in the summer and are looking to bring in another signing before the end of the window.
Watford have also signed Tom Cleverley on loan from Everton and a permanent deal will kick in if they stay up.
Watford view their January deals as a clear sign they will back Mazzarri and remain convinced that he will keep them up.
Mazzarri has struggled to learn English, has a crippling injury list as the ex-Napoli boss is a tough task master in training.
His team has also struggled for goals this season and they remain in danger after a bad slump in results.
But they hope the signing of Zarate will help solve that as they also look to bring in another signing to help improve their attacking options.
They have already held talks with Zarate and Fiorentina. They have also been linked with Bournemouth's Max Gradel.
