Burnley have made a bid of £12m for Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson, Sky Sports News understands.

The 25-year-old Middlesbrough academy graduate, who signed a new five-year deal last season, has been on the books at the Riverside since 2010.

He has made 185 appearances for the club and scored four goals. He has also had loan spells at Plymouth, York and Tranmere.

Gibson, who is the nephew of Boro owner Steve Gibson, was called up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate in March 2017 for the World Cup qualifier against Lithuania.

The Middlesbrough captain has also attracted interest from Everton, West Ham and Leicester who made an approach for him in the last two windows.

Burnley are one of only two Premier League clubs who have yet to make a signing this summer. Tottenham are the other club.

Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson is close to completing a move to Premier League side Burnley, says Boro manager Tony Pulis.

The 25-year-old was left out of Boro's 2-2 draw at Millwall on Saturday, with England Under-21 international Dael Fry brought in to deputise.

Centre-back Gibson has scored four goals in 203 games for the Teessiders since his 2011 debut.

"I think Ben's done," Pulis told BBC Tees after the Millwall game.

Pulis is confident the loss of Gibson, whose uncle is owner Steve Gibson, will not be an issue for his squad, but has eyes on other targets.

"Dael played really well," Pulis added. "[Aden] Flint played well today despite his mistakes at both ends of the pitch, I've got great confidence in Dael - he's going to be a very good player.

"On top of that we've got Danny [Ayala] to come in, who's one of the best centre-halves in the Championship.

"We've got loads of cover in his position. What we need to do is invest in other areas, where we desperately need players."

Burnley Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of defender Ben Gibson from Middlesbrough.

Gibson has agreed a four-year-deal at Turf Moor after Burnley paid a joint club record fee for the centre-back, who becomes Burnley’s first signing of the summer transfer window.

The deal sees Gibson, 25, return to the Premier League after playing the 2016/17 season in the top-flight with Middlesbrough.

The previous season, the former England under-21 international had helped Boro win promotion from the Championship behind title-winners Burnley.

Teesside-born Gibson – nephew of Boro chairman Steve – came through the youth ranks at the Riverside Stadium and made his senior debut as a substitute in a Championship fixture in April, 2011.

He then spent the following season out on loan with Plymouth Argyle and York City to gain first-team experience in League Two and the National League, helping York win promotion to the Football League and lift the FA Trophy at Wembley.

Gibson then joined Tranmere Rovers on loan for the 2012/13 campaign, playing 28 League One games before returning to Boro to feature in their final Championship game of the season.

The 2013/14 season saw Gibson establish himself as a first-team player with Middlesbrough before he helped his hometown club reach the Championship play-off final the following season.

Aitor Karanka’s side was beaten at Wembley in 2015/16, with Gibson a key player, they ended a seven-season absence from the Premier League by following the Clarets up to the top tier.

It proved only a one-season stay for Boro, but Gibson proved his Premier League credentials as an ever-present and one of the side’s top performers to earn a first call-up to the full England squad for a World Cup qualifier in March, 2017.

He then missed only one game as Boro reached the Championship play-off semi-finals last season but now gets the chance to return to Premier League football – and potentially play in Europe for the first time – with the Clarets.
