Manchester City prepared to win race for John Stones with £50m bid

Manchester City are prepared to pay up to £50million to land John Stones and are confident of signing the defender in time for him to  return from a post-Euro 2016 break to pre-season training with them.

Everton have placed the £50m valuation on Stones, but that has done  nothing to deter City and a firm bid is expected to be placed  imminently.

New City manager Pep Guardiola has earmarked Stones as a key part of  his revolution and his determination to get the 22-year-old was  strengthened by Aymeric Laporte’s decision to stay at Athletic Bilbao.

Barcelona, Manchester United and Chelsea have also been chasing  Stones, but City are confident that their willingness to spend so big  on the England international has effectively made it a one-horse race  for his signature.

City also believe Stones has already made his mind up that he wants to  move to the Etihad, with sources in the England camp claiming it was  an open secret during Euro 2016.

Stones did not play a single minute in the tournament, which was seen  as one of the catalogue of errors made by Roy Hodgson because the  former Barnsley youngster had been England’s best defender over the  warm-up games.

City are likely to start the bidding at under £50m, but have not  balked at the idea of eventually going that high to get their man.

Stones will comfortably become the most expensive defender in English  history, as his fee will outstrip the £34m Manchester United spent on  Rio Ferdinand in 2002.

Chelsea failed with four bids for Stones last year, the highest of  which was £37m, and new Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri  wanted to hold on to the player again.

But Moshiri has been convinced it will do the player nor the club any  good to keep him against his wishes for a second successive season, so  Everton will reluctantly sell when City match or get close enough to  their valuation.

Despite the fact he did not play, Stones has around three weeks off  after being at the Euros with England and the expectation is that a  deal with City will be completed in time for him to go straight into  pre-season training with his new club.

While Everton are now resigned to losing Stones, albeit for a very  good fee, Moshiri is determined to do everything in his power to keep  striker Romelu Lukaku at the club.

Manchester City want to buy Everton defender John Stones, but would have to pay the Goodison Park club around £50m for the England international.

New City manager Pep Guardiola is keen to make Stones his next high-profile transfer of the summer.

Stones was one of only two outfield players not to see action in England's disappointing Euro 2016 campaign.

Talks have yet to take place, but the asking price would make Stones, 22, Britain's most expensive defender.

Everton have no need to sell, but the possibility is growing that Stones will leave before the start of the new Premier League season.

He was at the centre of a transfer battle last summer when Everton rejected a succession of bids rising up to almost £40m from Chelsea, simply refusing to sell to then manager Jose Mourinho.

Guardiola has made Stones, who has 10 England caps, a priority target as he prepares to renew his rivalry with Mourinho, who is now across the city at Manchester United, and looks certain to get his man.

Manchester City have already signed Ilkay Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund and completed a £13.8m deal for Spain forward Nolito from Celta Vigo after their interest in Euro 2016 was ended by Italy.

Everton will give any money they get for Stones to new manager Ronaldo Koeman to increase his already considerable transfer fund.

John Stones has told Everton he wants to leave the club to join Manchester City this summer.
Everton want £50million for the England international which would make him Britain's most-expensive defender.
Stones is wanted by City boss Pep Guardiola and has informed the Toffees of his wish to move to the Etihad.
The 22-year-old centre back was the subject of interest from Chelsea last summer but the west London side failed to convince Everton into selling one of their prized assets despite tabling a £38m bid.
Stones, who moved to Goodison Park from Barnsley in January 2013 for a fee believed to be in the region of £3m, did not play a minute of England's failed Euro 2016 campaign.  
Everton boss Ronald Koeman has his eye on a number of defensive reinforcements with Scott Dann and Porto centre back Bruno Martins Indi among the names being considered.
Koeman made his first signing as Everton boss last week when he brought in compatriot Maarten Stekelenburg from Fulham.
He has been tipped to raid former side Southampton for striker Graziano Pelle but faces competition from Chelsea.
