'Pep Guardiola will join Manchester City at end of the season', claims German TV stationBayern Munich coach is said to have agreed deal to replace Manuel Pellegrini for 2016/17 season
Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola will leave the club at the end of this season and has reportedly agreed a deal with Manchester City to replace Manuel Pellegrini for the 2016/17 season, according to claims made in Germany."Tomorrow, tomorrow," said Guardiola when asked about his future on Saturday after Bayern Munich's 1-0 win away to Hannover. ZDF, a publicly funded TV station, claims that on Sunday, Guardiola will announce his intention to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the current season.
He will be replaced by ex-Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti who is currently on a sabbatical.
Bayern club chiefs are believed to have suspected Guardiola would not renew his contract at the club, after three years spent in charge at the Bundesliga champions, and have held talks with Ancelotti to be his longterm replacement. That move has been agreed in principle with the Italian's representative ironing out the details of a contract which will begin in the summer.
Sunday's expected announcement is not unusual. In January 2013 a similar situation occurred when it was revealed that Guardiola would take over from Jupp Heynckes at the end of the 2013/14 season.
Bayern went on to win the treble that year and steps have already been taken to ensure that a changing of the guard does not cause unrest with players, and have agreed new contracts with Thomas Muller, Xabi Alonso, Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez, announced on Friday.
The news, if true, will alert Premier League clubs including Manchester United, who suffered defeat to Norwich on Saturday and will be only too aware of the growing unrest among supporters disillusioned and tired of Louis Van Gaal's stuttering side. Rio Ferdinand has already warned his old club to do everything possible to avoid missing out on the "once in a lifetime" opportunity to appoint Guardiola.
Chelsea, too, will want to act quickly to appoint a longterm manager, with Guardiola and Ancelotti two of the only proven, world-class coaches currently available. Jose Mourinho has been linked with the top job at Old Trafford since his dismissal by Chelsea, but it is thought that club chiefs would feel uneasy appointing the Portuguese, especially as recent history suggests he could either set the Premier League ablaze or leave United in flames.
Guardiola is not seen as any such risk and is highly coveted among Europe's elite.
The manager has long been heavily linked with a move to the Etihad and his relationship with director of football Txiki Begiristain, who he worked under during a hugely successful spell at Barcelona, is believed to be key to the decision.
Should City appoint Guardiola it would open up the mouth-watering potential of a return to the rivalry the pair shared during Mourinho's tumultuous spell in charge of Real Madrid.Arsene Wenger believes speculation could upset Manchester City's title push as Manuel Pellegrini feels unsettled:
“It can be [destabilising] but Pellegrini is experienced enough to deal with it.
“I don't know if [the speculation] is down to City. That's down to media speculation and I don't know where that comes from. It's very difficult to master nowadays, to have this kind of speculation. If you look at Real Madrid, there is always speculation. It looks like it's part of our job now.”
