Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel set to join Fenerbahce in a £5.5million deal

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel is joining Fenerbahce in a £5.5million deal.
The Slovakia international has interest from Wolfsburg, Besiktas and China, as confirmed by his agent on Tuesday, but he is ready to join Fenerbahce after the European Championships after they agreed a fee with Liverpool.
The 31-year-old centre-back has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield following an injury in January which allowed Jurgen Klopp to settle on a defence of Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho.
Liverpool have also agreed to sign Joel Matip from Schalke.
Mithat Halis, Skrtel's representative, said: 'Fenerbahce have been interested for four years but there are also offers from China and Wolfsburg also want him.'
Skrtel is currently at Euro 2016 with Slovakia, with his nation winning their second game against Russia to put themselves in a good position to earn qualification from Group B.


Slovakia lost their first match against Wales, but impressed on Wednesday afternoon.
Skrtel has been with Liverpool for eight years, having signed for them from Zenit St Petersburg in 2008.
He cost the Anfield club £6.5million and has gone on to make 242 appearances for them in the league, scoring 16 goals.

Reds happy with bid for long-serving centre-back

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel looks set to seal a £5.5million move to Fenerbahce.

The Reds are ready to accept a bid of 7million Euros tabled by the Turkish outfit and give the long-serving centre-back permission to discuss personal terms.

Skrtel, who captained Slovakia to a 2-1 victory over Russia in Euro 2016 on Wednesday, is surplus to requirements after eight years of loyal service at Anfield.

The 31-year-old centre-back dropped down the pecking order following the appointment of Jurgen Klopp last season and is keen to take on a new challenge in order to secure regular first-team football.

With new signing Joel Matip arriving from Schalke and the threat of a long ban having been lifted from the shoulders of Mamadou Sakho, Skrtel’s opportunities would have been heavily limited next term.

Skrtel’s agent revealed on Tuesday that the player was considering offers from Fenerbahce and Wolfsburg, as well as a potentially lucrative move to China.

However, Fenerbahce, who were also keen on signing Skrtel last summer, are the clear front-runners with an agreement now in place between the two clubs. Liverpool did business with the Turks last summer when they allowed Lazar Markovic to join them on a season-long loan.

The deal is set to be completed after Skrtel’s duties at Euro 2016 are complete.

Skrtel made 320 appearances for the Reds following his £6.5million move from Zenit St Petersburg in 2008. However, he struggled with both fitness and form last season. He made just four starts following the turn of the year and was an unused substitute in May’s Europa League final.

Martin Skrtel is likely to be confirmed as a Fenerbahce player this week.

The Turkish club’s president Aziz Yildirim told AMK Spor: “(Gregory) Van der Wiel and Slovak Skrtel transfers are almost done.”

Liverpool have already reached an agreement with the Istanbul-based club for a fee of around £5m and it is believed it is just personal terms which remain to be thrashed out.

Skrtel, 31, has been in France at Euro 2016 with Slovakia, with a mixed campaign brought to an end by a 3-0 defeat to Germany.

The 31-year-old will leave Anfield after an eight-year career which brought 320 appearances and just Lucas Leiva among the current first team playing squad has been at Liverpool longer.

But last season was disrupted by poor form and injuries and Skrtel made just 27 appearances in Liverpool’s 63 games, the fewest since his debut year in 2008.

The arrival of Joel Matip and the expected progress of Joe Gomez has made him surplus to requirements in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Martin Skrtel: Fenerbahce in talks with Liverpool over Slovakia defender

Fenerbahce have confirmed the club are in talks with Liverpool over the transfer of defender Martin Skrtel.

The Slovakia captain, who represented his country at this summer's European Championships, joined Liverpool from Zenit St Petersburg in 2008.

Skrtel, 31, made 21 starts in the Premier League last season, but Jurgen Klopp has added to his defence this summer with the signing of Joel Matip.

Fenerbahce finished second in the Turkish top-flight last season.
