Alexis Sanchez has agreed a four-and-a-half-year contract worth £14million after tax to join Manchester United.

And Sanchez is now just waiting to find out if Henrikh Mkhitaryan will agree a switch in the other direction to Arsenal, which would trigger his move to Old Trafford.

Sanchez’s lucrative contract means United’s deal to sign the forward is worth over £60m once his £30m value, agents’ fee, worth more than £10m, and signing on fee are taken into consideration.

Manchester City were not prepared to pay so much for a player who only has six months remaining on his contract.

Similarly, despite Antonio Conte admitting his admiration of the Chilean, Chelsea, who went close to signing Sanchez last summer, would not match the figures on offer at Old Trafford.

Sanchez is now hoping Mkhitaryan will quickly reach an agreement with Arsenal, although the Armenian wants to become the highest earner at the Emirates.

Having already sanctioned the £20m sale of Theo Walcott to Everton, Arsenal are closing in on a move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who wants to leave Borussia Dortmund.

Sky Sports News understands talks are continuing tonight between Arsenal and Manchester United over Alexis Sanchez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

There is no agreement between the clubs for either player at this stage and either are yet to comment on reports that Sanchez has agreed personal terms with United.

Arsene Wenger said on Sunday that he expected Sanchez’s future to have been decided by Tuesday. It is understood talks over a proposed player swap have prolonged negotiations.

Arsenal’s players want Alexis Sanchez’s proposed move to Manchester United concluded before Saturday’s home game against Crystal Palace.

The 29-year-old was left out of last weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth with Arsene Wenger claiming the situation would be resolved within 48 hours. Manchester City subsequently dropped out of the race, leaving United in pole position, but negotiations have slowed as an agreement over a swap deal which would see Henrikh Mkhitaryan move to Emirates Stadium has yet to be reached.

Standard Sport understands that many players have grown weary of the Sanchez saga dragging on and want a resolution this week.

It is believed Sanchez has become an increasingly divisive figure as he continues to agitate for a transfer. Wenger’s decision to drop Sanchez against Bournemouth was partly based on tensions within the camp and the Gunners boss could face another tough call should Sanchez remain an Arsenal player this weekend.

Talks are continuing over Sanchez’s switch to Old Trafford but the current deal now hinges on Mkhitaryan agreeing to move the other way. The Armenian is keen on joining Arsenal but is seeking an increase on his £140,000 weekly wage at United.

The Gunners are, to an extent, hamstrung by the £300,000-a-week offer they made to Sanchez, with Mkhitaryan’s agent Mino Raiola using that figure as evidence of how far they can go.

A straight cash deal is an alternative with United prepared to pay £35m but Wenger would prefer to include Mkhitaryan with the pursuit of other targets - Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Borussia Dortmund and Bordeaux’s Malcom - on the backburner until the final terms of Sanchez’s departure are clear.

Arsenal are highly unlikely to sign all three. United remain confident of landing Sanchez and the Gunners’ hopes of securing a player in exchange increased today when quotes from Mkhitaryan dating back to 2009 resurfaced. “My favourite team is Arsenal,” he told Uefa’s official website aged 20 when playing in Armenia.

Manchester United could buy Alexis Sánchez from Arsenal even if Henrikh Mkhitaryan refuses to move the other way, with José Mourinho hopeful that Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, would sign off a deal financed without money received from the Armenian’s sale.

Mino Raiola, Mkhitaryan’s agent, has claimed his player holds the key to Sánchez’s transfer to United in a transaction that would be worth around £60m once the Chilean’s fee and that of his agent are factored in.

However, it is understood that if Mkhitaryan does not leave, Mourinho believes that given the club’s robust finances Woodward could still sanction a move for a player who would potentially vastly improve United.

There is some disquiet at Old Trafford regarding Raiola’s stance and a view that he may be posturing. As Mkhitaryan has regularly been dropped by Mourinho from the match-day squad his prospects of regular game-time would be bleak should he refuse to leave for Arsenal. This may cause him to accept his career at United is over and agree the transfer.

Although Sánchez is out of contract in the summer and at 29 would have little or no sell-on value, Mourinho believes the forward would allow a step change in the side’s development. United are second in the Premier League but trail Manchester City by 12 points after 23 matches.
