Athletic Bilbao intend to hold talks with central defender Aymeric Laporte this week as they make one last attempt to persuade him to remain in the Basque Country and spurn Manchester City's advances.
French defender Laporte, 22, is one of manager Pep Guardiola's key targets as he seeks to bolster his new side ahead of his first season in English football.
Laporte has a £39million buyout clause in his contract and City will have to meet this asking price if they are to secure the defender.
Athletic adopt a policy of only using homegrown players with a Basque heritage and they are therefore notoriously robust in negotiating the sale of their players.
He is understood to be recuperating well after suffering a broken leg and dislocated ankle during a France Under 21 match in March. Sources in Bilbao suggest that he is close to receiving the medical all-clear.
Laporte's current five-year deal expires in the summer of 2019 but a buyout clause is inserted and the player is believed to be heavily leaning towards an exit from Bilbao this summer.
The Basque side, however, will not give in easily and they are set to hold a meeting with the player during the coming week and attempt to persuade him to sign a new deal with the club on improved terms.
Laporte is prepared to hear out his current employers but should he decide to leave Bilbao, as appears likely, City remain the frontrunners.
Despite suggestions to the contrary, Laporte is not represented by super-agent Jorge Mendes or Barcelona legend Carlos Puyol and is instead working only with a lawyer as he addresses his future.

Manchester City are targeting the Athletic Bilbao defender whose lack of involvement at the Euros could aid the move

A deal to bring Aymeric Laporte to Manchester City could be brought forward due to his lack of involvement in Euros.

Pep Guardiola has identified the Athletic Bilbao as a top summer target as he looks to breathe new life into City’s ailing squad.

The 22-year-old centre back is just returning to light training after suffering a broken leg and dislocated ankle in March, leaving him free to negotiate a move to the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola has also made it clear to sporting director Txiki Begiristain that John Stones is a player he admires and would fit into his style of play.

City are in talks with Laporte’s representatives – but insist a deal isn’t imminent and is unlikely to happen this week or next.

However, his lack of involvement in this summer’s tournament in his home country means City won’t be forced to wait to do a deal, as is the case with Stones - and Arsenal’s move for Jamie Vardy.

Laporte is widely regarded to be one of Europe’s promising defensive prospects, having played close to 150 games for Athletic since he broke into the first team back in 2012.

With Vincent Kompany’s injury problems still a concern and doubts over the form of Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi, brining in new defensive recruits is a priority for Guardiola this summer.

Laporte move to Manchester City imminent

There could be yet another big name departure at Athletic Club this summer, with Manchester City looking to tie up a deal for Aymeric Laporte over the coming days.
The French defender has had an offer on the table since March, but the Basques are notoriously hard negotiators and will look to recoup the full 50 million euro buyout clause in his contract.
That particular deal runs until 2019, and there had been rumours he would be offered a new one with improved wages, but it now looks more likely he will move to England.Having suffered with a serious injury at the end of last season,Laporte will not be in action at the European Championships, which kick off with hosts France against Romania on Friday night.Should he make the move,
it will be the third straight year in which City have spent big on a defender, with Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi joining previously.
