Rafa Benitez meets Lee Charnley for talks over Newcastle future

Rafa Benitez met Newcastle United managing director Lee Charnley on Thursday for initial talks over the Spaniard's future, according to Sky sources.

We also understand Benitez is seeking assurances from the club hierarchy, including having full control of transfers.

Less than 24 hours after United were condemned to life in the Championship by Sunderland's 3-0 win over Everton, Benitez sat down with Charnley at the club's Darsley Park training ground.

It is understood the three-year contract Benitez signed in March included a release clause should he not manage to preserve the club's top-flight status.

A supporters group, the Newcastle Fans' Forum, have issued a direct plea to the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss urging him to stay on Tyneside as he prepares for the final match of the season, Tottenham's visit to St James' Park on Sunday.

A statement read: "Message to Rafa Benitez - whilst we fully accept that the short term prospect of life in the Championship may not be as appealing as other OFFERS that you may be presented with, we can certainly promise you that the potential rewards of the longer term would exceed any position that you consider."

The current squad is likely to be shaken-up markedly in the wake of relegation but club officials are adamant that they will decide who stays and who goes - and not the players themselves.

Rafael Benitez says he could continue as Newcastle manager after holding "positive" discussions with the relegated Premier League club.

The Magpies' second relegation to the Championship in seven years was confirmed on Wednesday.

Benitez, 56, succeeded the sacked Steve McClaren in March, winning two of his nine league games in charge.

"If I'm here and discussing it, it's because there is a chance, we have to keep talking," said the Spaniard.

"It could take a couple of weeks maximum."

The ex-Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid manager is believed to have a break clause in the three-year contract he signed after McClaren's departure.

The club were 19th when he took over, but he could not save them despite claiming 10 points from nine games.

They were relegated by local rivals Sunderland's victory over Everton on Wednesday.

Former Magpies captain Alan Shearer said on Thursday he would be "amazed" if Benitez was still in charge next season.

But Benitez OFFERED hope that he might stay when asked about his future in a news conference ahead of Sunday's final game of the season against Tottenham.

"We will have more meetings. The things that have been said have been positive and we will continue to have meetings," added Benitez.

"I want the same as the fans - a successful team, a strong team and to get promoted to the Premier League as soon as possible."

Newcastle United are edging closer to confirming that Rafa Benitez will stay on as manager next season, Sky sources understand.

Benitez signed a three-year deal to become Newcastle boss back in March, when he replaced Steve McClaren, but the contract is reported to include an option to cancel at the end of the season.

The Spaniard was unable to keep the club in the Premier League, leading to doubts over whether he would stay, but it appears a meeting with owner Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley on Sunday was positive.

They talked for two hours after the stunning 5-1 win over Tottenham at St James' Park, giving Ashley a first chance to speak to Benitez face-to-face since his arrival at the club.

After the game Benitez said his heart was leading him towards staying on Tyneside to try and guide Newcastle back to the Premier League, and he admitted that fantastic support from the club's fans was also swaying him.

Sources understand Ashley was impressed by Benitez during their meeting, with the Spaniard keen to find out what ambitions the owner has for their bid to get out of the Championship at the first attempt.

Benitez is reported to be particularly keen to take control over the club's transfer business before committing his future to the club.

After beating Spurs, he said: "I said I am quite open and I am quite pleased with everything, the staff, everything, now it's just to be sure that we have to do what we have to do to be sure that we can go up if I stay here.

"They know, we have been talking. I have the same feeling as the fans, they want a strong team next season to be sure we go up again.

"The way and the ideas will not be difficult to have, to have similar ideas, but we have to sit down and make sure of everything."
