Diego Costa's agent Jorge Mendes is working hard to end the drama surrounding the Chelsea striker and broker his return to Atletico Madrid, Sky Sports News understands.

Negotiations are ongoing over the 28-year-old's exit from Stamford Bridge, but despite reports in Spain, nothing has yet been agreed between the Blues and Atletico - the club from which signed Costa in a £32million deal in 2014.

Spain international Costa has accused the club of treating him "like a criminal" - a suggestion laughed off by boss Antonio Conte last week ahead of their clash with Tottenham, live on Sky Sports Football.

Chelsea are understood to want £50m for the striker and Costa told ESPN Brazil on Friday that Atletico were offering more than they sold him for three years ago.

Other clubs are still interested but, so far, Costa only wants Atletico and has stated so publicly since the summer.

Costa has not returned to Chelsea since they lifted the Premier League title in May and remains in self-imposed exile in his native Brazil, despite his club insisting he meets his contractual obligations to get fit and make himself available for selection.

Costa was pictured last week training by himself wearing a pair of Chelsea shorts, but he has said he does not intend to return to their Cobham training base.

Monaco and Marseille have expressed an interest in signing Chelsea's rebel striker Diego Costa, according to the London Evening Standard.

The Spain international has express a desire to return to previous club Atletico Madrid, but admitted at the end of last week that he would consider other destinations, sparking the interest of the Ligue 1 clubs.

It's going to be a busy week at Chelsea and the future of Diego Costa still needs to be sorted out.

The striker is refusing to come back to London and Atletico Madrid are still refusing to pay the Blues' £50m asking price.

One thing holding up a deal is Costa's £150,000 a week wages. with Atleti unwilling to pay him that much when he can't play for them until January because of their transfer ban.
One small bit of good news is that Costa has been doing his best to keep fit in Brazil by going to the gym every day and the player was pictured having a kick about on a five-a-side pitch yesterday.

Everton manager Ronald Koeman says he would welcome the chance to sign Chelsea's exiled striker Diego Costa as he looks to bolster his attacking options before the transfer deadline.

Koeman is eager to add a striker as he is relying on youngsters Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Sandro Ramirez so far, with Wayne Rooney occupying a deeper role.

Although the idea of Costa trading Stamford Bridge for Goodison Park seems fanciful at this stage, Koeman did not rule out the possibility.

“I said always (there is) a warm welcome for every good player and he’s a good player,” said Koeman, whose side face Chelsea this weekend.

Costa has refused to return to Chelsea training, while all parties are seeking a solution. If the striker was sold or sent on loan next week there would be a long queue of managers waiting to pounce.

Koeman is eager to ease the burden on youngster Calvert-Lewin, however. With Sandro injured, the void left by Romelu Lukaku’s sale is yet to be filled.

“We are still looking to bring in a striker,” said Koeman.

“It’s not about not being happy with Dominic but he is still young and we need more competition in front. We have tough fixtures and a lot of international players and a lot of players selected by the U21s. With young players it is most difficult being regular in performances. Dominic is like Tom Davies, an exception, and he is doing really well.”

Everton manager Ronald Koeman says he wants two more players before the end of transfer window, although remained coy on links to Diego Costa.

The Toffees have already made seven first team signings this summer, with five starting during a 2-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

And after a busy week that saw three away trips, including a Europa League qualifier in Croatia on Thursday, Koeman admits that he needs a couple more bodies in the squad.

"We need at least two more players, to get numbers up but the most important is to have a striker and one more player because that's what we need," he told a post-match press conference.

"If you look to all the squads of the big teams, they have so many options and if we get everybody back like Seamus Coleman, Morgan Schneiderlin, Yannick Bolasie, Davy Klassen, Ross Barkley and the rest, then you're talking about six or seven first team players.

"I'm always confident because we did some good business but everybody knows and the board knows the importance of those two signings."

One of the names linked with Everton is wantaway Chelsea striker Costa, but when quizzed if he could arrive at Goodison Park before Thursday's Deadline Day, Koeman kept his cards close to his chest.

"I don't know [about Costa]. We are looking at players who are available and if we sign somebody, it is somebody who makes the team better," the Dutchman added.

"Mirallas was out because he is struggling to deal with moments in the season and with disappointments. Everybody can be disappointed but I expect from everybody to be part of the team and if somebody is showing that his attitude is not the same, I make decisions," he said.

"Until today, yes [Barkley is staying at Everton], because we don't have any offer on the table for Ross."

Fresh talks have been held over Costa between Chelsea and Atletico, and there is now a sense that that two clubs are close to agreeing a deal that is likely to be worth around £40m plus significant add-ons.

Atletico are thought to be open to sending Costa on loan for six months, until he can play for the Spanish club in January, or putting him on a specialised training regime.

Everton are one of a number of clubs, including Monaco and Marseille, interested in taking Costa on loan but sources close to the 28-year-old doubt whether he would want to play in England again up until the New Year.

Chelsea would not try to block Costa joining Everton on loan, as he would not have to face them before January and, in theory, he could do damage to some of their Premier League title rivals.

Diego Costa may take a four-month break in the Canary Islands in a bid to solve his Chelsea stalemate.

La Liga club Las Palmas could take Stamford Bridge outcast Costa on loan while he waits to re-join Atletico Madrid permanently when their transfer ban gets lifted in January.

Chelsea are desperate to offload the bad-boy Spain international striker and want to find a compromise so they can make £30million back on a player who has been in self-imposed exile all summer.

Boss Antonio Conte is lining up a late move for Swansea striker Fernando Llorente, also a Spain international, and wants him for around £15m.

That is another signal Costa is on his way, with Chelsea pushing for £40m for a player they signed from Atletico for £32m three years ago.

Chelsea are still eager to get a deal done for England midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after agreeing a £40m deal with Arsenal but they have not yet got it over the line.

COSTA UPDATE

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has hinted that he is optimistic over the club’s chances of securing Diego Costa’s services.

Costa has made no secret of his desire to leave Chelsea and re-join Atletico this summer.

Atleti have not yet reached an agreement with Chelsea over a deal, but club president Cerezo is hopeful of being able to bring back the Spain forward.

Speaking about Costa on Spanish radio station Cadena SER, Cerezo said: “He has a contract with another club, it’s a complicated matter. We are taking things with ease. As long as Chelsea do not agree to his transfer, Costa will be [a] Chelsea [player]. Am I pessimistic or optimistic regarding the arrival of Costa? I am always optimistic.”

Atletico Madrid and Chelsea have held further talks on Wednesday over a compromise fee for Diego Costa.
A Spanish lawyer representing Chelsea is understood to have listened to Atletico's proposal which is to pay around £39m with a further £10m based on add-ons.
Costa has interest from Everton, Las Palmas and Besiktas among others over a potential short term loan until he is cleared to be registered to play for Atletico Madrid in January.
The Brazil-born striker is keen to leave Stamford Bridge after being made surplus to requirements ahead of the start of the new season.
He revealed over the summer that he had received a text from Antonio Conte telling him he was no longer part of his plans.
In an interview with Sportsmail, which took place in his home town of Lagarto, where he has spent his summer, Costa said he felt as though he had been treated like a 'criminal'.
The 28-year-old has insisted that the only club he will join is his former side Atletico, who he won La Liga with in 2013-14.
