Leicester City are preparing to launch an appeal against FIFA's decision to deny the registration of Adrien Silva, Sky sources understand.

Leicester thought they had beaten the August 31 deadline to sign Silva as a replacement for Danny Drinkwater, whose move to Chelsea was also confirmed after the 11pm cut-off on Deadline Day.

But it emerged the documentation confirming the deal between Leicester and Sporting for the £22m move arrived with the Football Association 14 seconds after their midnight deadline had passed.

The FA immediately forwarded the deal to FIFA's Transfer Matching System, which was rejected by the world governing body because the deadline had passed., but it is understood Leicester will appeal against the ruling.

"Unfortunately it's still an ongoing process," manager Craig Shakespeare said. "I'd love to be in a position to say he's available for selection but we're still just waiting for the legal processes to take care.

"So there's no further news. I don't have any hold on that, I have to wait and make sure that the people who are going through the processes do that.

"Hopefully I will know in the next 24 or 48 hours."

Adrien Silva has returned to Portugal as Leicester continue to wait on his availability.

The Portugal international is not allowed to train with the Foxes after FIFA blocked his £22m switch from Sporting Lisbon because his documentation was received by the FA 14 seconds after the deadline.

Leicester are still yet to hear whether the transfer will be ratified and the midfielder will continue to sit out when they host Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, live on Sky Sports.

Adrien Silva has returned to Portugal as Leicester City prepare an appeal after Fifa rejected the club's application to register the midfielder.

The Foxes agreed to sign the Portugal Euro 2016 winner from Sporting Lisbon for £22m on 31 August.

Leicester missed the deadline by 14 seconds and Silva's registration was not completed in time with Fifa.

"He's an expectant father so he spent a bit of time with his family," said Foxes boss Craig Shakespeare.

Silva, 28, has played just three competitive games this season - all before leaving Sporting Lisbon - and Shakespeare said that was a "concern" for the player ahead of the World Cup next summer.

"The conversations I've had with him so far are very brief," added Shakespeare.

"But of course in the back of his mind the World Cup will be a concern. I think he is more interested in finding the right solution for here and now."

Adrien Silva has lost his appeal to join Leicester on a provisional basis

Adrien Silva's application to be allowed to join Leicester City on a provisional basis has been turned down by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The midfielder's intended move from Portuguese club Sporting, to the Foxes, was blocked by FIFA because it fell outside the registration period by just 14 seconds.

Leicester signed the 28-year-old just before the transfer window closed on August 31 but FIFA, which handles international transfers, received the paperwork moments after the deadline for registration had ended.

Silva appealed against this decision to the CAS, sport's highest tribunal, and applied for "urgent provisional measures" which would allow him to register for Leicester until the final appeal was heard.

But CAS said in a statement that it had rejected the application for provisional measures.

However, they did say that proceedings would continue "and a final decision on the merits will be issued after a hearing, which is yet to be fixed."

In August, Sporting agreed to sell Silva for £22m, pending international clearance.

However, because the transfer missed the deadline, it means he is unable to play for the Premier League club until January 2018.

Adrien Silva: Leicester finally complete Portugal midfielder's £22m signing



Midfielder Adrien Silva has finally joined Leicester City, after the Premier League club missed the deadline to sign him in August by 14 seconds.

Fifa rejected the 28-year-old's move from Sporting Lisbon in the summer as the paperwork arrived too late.

The Portugal international has been training with Leicester throughout the winter to maintain his fitness.

His £22m deal was completed on Monday, but he is not eligible for the Foxes' home match against Huddersfield.

Speaking about the four-month wait for the move to be approved, Silva said: "When you have a period like this, it's very up and down.

"You have to keep a positive mentality and that's what I've tried to do. I've kept my mind focused on my job and what I love to do."

Silva, who was born in France, has won 20 international caps and was part of the Portugal squad that won Euro 2016.

"It's been very frustrating, but now the difficult times are past me and I'm very happy to be close to my goal," he told LCFC TV.

"I've been working hard every day to arrive at this moment and I'm in good shape.

"It's been very important to keep training because it's a long time not playing. There is nothing better than the game."
