Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fears he is facing another lengthy spell out after suffering a double injury blow against Barcelona. The Arsenal midfielder now faces a race against time to prove his fitness for England’s Euro 2016 campaign.Oxlade-Chamberlain was left with ligament damage to his right knee after the 2-0 Champions League defeat on Tuesday.
As Arsenal broke upfield, the winger overran the ball as he burst towards the Barca penalty area.
Javier Mascherano raced across and reached the ball a split second ahead of Oxlade-Chamberlain, resulting in a high-speed collision between the pair.
The Arsenal player limped through the rest of the half and surprisingly re-emerged for the second period, before quickly being withdrawn when it became clear he could not run off the injury.
Now, Sportsmail understands, it appears Oxlade-Chamberlain hurt an ankle in the challenge, too. He left the ground on crutches, with his right leg heavily strapped. The 22-year-old was assessed on Wednesday and will have a scan on Thursday. But there are concerns he could miss the remaining three months of the season.
Oxlade-Chamberlain is certainly out of Sunday’s visit to Manchester United, where manager Arsene Wenger has the option of starting Danny Welbeck, Joel Campbell or Theo Walcott in his place.
It is also doubtful Oxlade-Chamberlain will be available for England’s prestige friendlies against Germany and Holland next month
If the club’s fears are realised, Oxlade-Chamberlain will have little time to prove his fitness for Euro 2016.
Missing out on this summer’s Finals in France would be a major blow after the winger sat out the last World Cup with an injury to his right knee.
Likewise, losing Oxlade-Chamberlain is bad news for Wenger as he approaches the business end of the season.
The Gunners’ Champions League prospects are bleak ahead of next month’s return leg in the Nou Camp but they are still challenging for the Double, with Oxlade-Chamberlain previously expected to play a key role.
The former Southampton trainee is set to become the subject of interest from rival clubs this summer as he enters the final two years of his contract.
Arsenal are preparing to open talks over a new deal and are hopeful of coming to an agreement.
