Terry & Gerrard backed as captain
Terry and Gerrard are in the running to succeed Beckham
Former England manager Graham Taylor believes Chelsea defender John Terry should become captain of his national side after David Beckham stood down.
But ex-England skipper Terry Butcher says new boss Steve McClaren must pick Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard.
Taylor told BBC Five Live Sport: "At the back you can see more of what's going on, so it is Terry for me."
But Butcher argued: "I would give the armband to Gerrard and play him on the right, he's got the experience for it."
He added: "You could look at Terry as well but I would say Gerrard out of the two.
"Gary Neville maybe in the squad could be a temporary captain but you want to look ahead and get somebody there for the long term.
"You are looking at a captain for Euro 2008 and the World Cup in 2010 and it is Gerrard for me."
Beckham relinquished the captaincy on Sunday following England's exit in the quarter-finals of the World Cup at the hands of Portugal 24 hours earlier.
He was skipper for six years, having been given the armband by caretaker-manager Peter Taylor for the friendly with Italy in November 2000.
The Real Madrid midfielder captained the side on 58 occasions.
