Victor Valdes’ last communication with the outside world just over a month ago felt more like the plea of a man in captivity than one of the world’s most decorated goalkeepers.The 33-year-old posted a picture of a handwritten note in his left hand that translates from Spanish as ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’.
It was accompanied by the following tweet: ‘Not to disappoint those who wish to return to see me play, my motivation. I struggle to be free and enjoy my profession.’
Valdes’ feeling of isolation is understandable. He has been ostracised at Manchester United by Louis van Gaal since the two men fell out spectacularly earlier this year over his participation for the club’s Under 21 team.
Every day, Valdes trains on his own at Carrington, often with the help of academy goalkeeper coach Alan Fettis. His training times are specifically set so he does not see his team-mates and he no longer has a locker in the first-team dressing room.He remains close friends with the rest of United’s Spanish-speaking contingent, and insiders speak of a polite individual who still has a presence around the training ground.
But there is no prospect of Valdes playing for the club again.
Although he wants to stay in the Premier League,
he is increasingly resigned to the fact that will not secure a move away in the January transfer window and will have to wait until his contract at Old Trafford runs out in the summer before he can escape.Until then, a man who has won the World Cup and European Championships with Spain, and the Champions League three times at Barcelona, remains an outcast.
It has been this way since Valdes returned for pre-season training in July to discover that his personal belongings had been moved from the dressing room area.
He was left off United’s tour of the United States in the summer and then the official team photo in September.
Only a month ago, his wife Yolanda Cardona angrily criticised the club in public for not inviting Valdes to the UNICEF charity ball at Old Trafford.
‘He is not selected because he does not follow my philosophy,’ said Van Gaal when quizzed about Valdes’ dramatic fall from grace in July.
‘When you are not willing to follow the principles of the philosophy, there is only one way and that is out.’
As justification for his actions, Van Gaal claimed that Valdes had ‘refused’ to play for the Under 21s. The player hit back – on social media, naturally – by posting pictures of his Under 21 appearances for United last season.
It is understood that the fallout occurred when Valdes went to see Van Gaal to express his concerns about the number of Under 21 appearances he was having to make.
Van Gaal wanted the goalkeeper to keep playing for the junior side to improve his fitness. Valdes, on the other hand, was left wondering why he chose United over Liverpool only to end up stuck in the Under 21s.
It had already filtered back to Van Gaal that Valdes was unimpressed by what he had seen of the Dutchman’s trusted goalkeeper coach Frans Hoek since he arrived at United in October 2014.
The initial arrangement was for Valdes to rehabilitate the knee injury that effectively ended his glittering career at Barcelona, but he was rewarded with an 18-month contract in January to act as back-up to David de Gea.
However, the only first-team fixtures he will ever play for United were the final two games of last season against Arsenal and Hull – and only then because Van Gaal was trying to put him in the shop window to get rid.
‘I want to help him so he can show his qualities for another club,’ said the manager. ‘I am always a very social human being.’
By the time the issue of De Gea’s on-off move to Real Madrid came to a head in the summer, Van Gaal had already signed Sergio Romero and even young Sam Johnstone had moved ahead of Valdes in the pecking order.
The season kicked off with Romero in goal and the bizarre sight of De Gea, Valdes and Anders Lindegaard sat together in the stands.
Valdes has the support of De Gea and United’s other Spanish players. His treatment at the hands of Van Gaal remains one of their biggest issues with the authoritarian manager.
‘It’s a shame what is happening with Victor as he is a great goalkeeper,’ said Juan Mata in October. ‘He wants to compete and has proved himself as a goalkeeper. I don’t know what happened between him and Van Gaal, that is something only they can say.’
It’s clear that there will be no way back, no reconciliation. It looks like United and Valdes are stuck with one another for the next five months. Until then, to use his own words, he will struggle to be free.
