Steven Naismith in line to join Norwich City from Everton for £8m
• Deal agreed but rivals show an interest in signing Scot
• Canaries had initial offer turned down in summer

Norwich City have agreed a deal in principle with Everton for the £8m purchase of Steven Naismith having revived interest first expressed in the summer, though they face competition from a number of rival Premier League clubs to secure the Scotland international.

Naismith, scorer of an eye-catching hat-trick in the victory over Chelsea in September, has started only four Premier League games this season, and none at all since the loss to Manchester United at Goodison Park in mid-October.

The 29-year-old had been the subject of a £7m bid from the Canaries in the last week of the summer window which was rejected with Roberto Martínez suggesting then that the player was “too important to Everton” to be permitted to leave given there was no real time in which to secure a replacement.

The manager’s stance has since shifted, with Martínez indicating earlier this month that he intended to address the situation in face-to-face talks with Naismith in January.

Norwich, who have made no secret of their desire to add to their forward ranks having also failed with a £9m move for Crystal Palace’s Dwight Gayle on deadline day in September, have now returned to the Merseyside club with a new offer that has been deemed acceptable, though it remains to be seen whether the striker’s other suitors follow up their interest.

Sunderland, Swansea City, Aston Villa and Newcastle United have indicated an interest in the Scot as they search for goals to stave off the threat of relegation.
Middlesbrough, who are currently top of the Championship, have also been monitoring the potential availability of a player who scored against Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City last season, only to find his place usurped by the excellent Romelu Lukaku and the ease in which Gerard Deulofeu has settled back into the Premier League since his summer arrival from Barcelona.

While Naismith, who came off the bench and played for 25 minutes in the 4-3 defeat by Stoke on Monday, is not agitating for a move, the need for regular first-team football at this stage of his career is clear. Martínez, who faces a similar situation with the little-used Belgium international Kevin Mirallas, addressed Naismith’s bit-part role earlier this month.

“I sat down with Steven in August and said: ‘You are too important to Everton to allow you to go at this stage. I don’t know how Arouna Koné will be, how Gerard Deulofeu will be, how the others will be,’” he said. “The offer of Norwich arrived very late and I couldn’t replace him. It was a very honest communication and I said in January we will reassess it.

“The way Steven Naismith behaves, and the way he works, means that when he says something you have to listen. Anything could happen between now and then, but I will listen to him. If it is someone who is selfish and has never been bothered about helping the team then you can pay them back in the same way. It is quite straightforward.”

Naismith may have been out of the team but he kept busy over Christmas by paying for dinner for hundreds of homeless people in Glasgow, an event organised by the charity Loaves and Fishes, which helps those sleeping rough in the city.

Norwich will complete the £2.5m permanent signing of West Ham’s one-time England winger Matt Jarvis, who has spent the first half of the season on loan at Carrow Road, on 2 January.

The manager, Alex Neil, was frustrated by the inability to force through further late business in the summer window, but has still steered his side three points clear of the relegation zone in the period since.

Martínez: Future of Norwich City target Naismith to be resolved soon

Everton manager Roberto Martínez expects that the future of Norwich City target Steven Naismith should be resolved in the "next couple of weeks."

The Canaries are understood to have made another approach for the 29-year-old, who they tried to sign in the summer.

Martínez admits that the player could leave, but wants any potential suitors to wait.

"We all know that Steven Naismith had one Premier League club showing interest in the previous window and I'm sure that's an open secret for everyone.

There's nothing to comment. During January, we'll make sure that we know exactly how we need to move forward.

We speak constantly, but in terms of making a decision about his future it's going to be over the next couple of weeks.

We've got a really busy period now and we need to make sure we go through these games. Mid-January will be a perfect moment to have a little bit of a calmer period."

– ROBERTO MARTÍNEZ, EVERTON MANAGER

NAISMITH DEAL HITS SNAG?

Norwich’s hopes of signing Everton striker Steven Naismith have suffered a setback, according to Sky Sources

The transfer is reportedly in doubt after talks between the parties stalled but there is still a chance the move may go ahead.

Everton striker Steven Naismith a target for struggling Swansea

By Peter Gilbert
Last Updated: 14/01/16 7:08pm

Swansea have joined Norwich in the race to sign Steven Naismith from Everton.

Naismith has been heavily linked with a move to Carrow Road but the deal appears to have stalled and the Swans have now confirmed their interest.

"I think he's on a list," said interim manager Alan Curtis. "I know he's a player available, he's an excellent player. Like all good players, if we can afford to bring him in, then we will be interested.

"We're still looking for that main striker. Steve is probably someone who plays just behind the main striker but someone we will be interested in."

Curtis's hopes of adding to his squad during the January window have been boosted by the £12m received from Newcastle for Jonjo Shelvey.

"There's a need to strengthen and we've got some money in the bank now, so it's important we spend it," Curtis added.

Naismith has fallen down the pecking order at Goodison Park and manager Roberto Martinez admitted recently the striker is contemplating his future with the club.

Despite scoring a hat-trick against Chelsea in September, the Scotland international has made just four starts in the Premier League this season.

The 29-year-old, who arrived on Merseyside on a free transfer in 2012 and signed a three-year contract extension 12 months ago, has found chances limited this term with Martinez preferring in-form Romelu Lukaku and Gerard Deulofeu.

Naismith has not featured in Everton's squad since the defeat to Stoke on December 28 due to a niggling ankle injury.

Steven Naismith set for Norwich medical ahead of move from Everton
By Lyall Thomas
Last Updated: 18/01/16 9:20am

Everton forward Steven Naismith is set to undergo a medical at Norwich ahead of a potential £8.5m move, Sky sources understand.

Should the 29-year-old complete the assessment it is hoped the deal could be announced as early as Monday.

The Canaries manager Alex Neil said after the weekend's defeat to Bournemouth that the deal had been close for "the best part of two weeks".

"There has been a lot of talk about it but until things are complete and over the line there is not much to say," the Scotsman said.

Sky sources reported back in December that Norwich were to renew their interest in the Scotland international after a failed attempt to sign him last summer.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez admitted last week that Naismith was one of three players set to leave Goodison Park along with Aiden McGeady and Darron Gibson.

But it is understood the deal stalled last week after interest from Swansea City before being renewed over the last few days.

Steven Naismith: Everton forward set to join Norwich City for £8.5m

By Simon Stone
BBC Sport
Everton forward Steven Naismith is set to have a medical on Monday before an £8.5m move to Norwich City.
There had been contact between the clubs at the start of the transfer window and the deal made significant progress over the weekend.
The 29-year-old joined Everton from Rangers in 2012 and has scored 25 goals in 123 appearances for the club.
The Scotland international has started four Premier League games this season and has not played since 28 December.

In August, Everton rejected a £7m bid from Norwich for Naismith, who they signed on a free transfer.
Norwich are 16th in the Premier League, four points above the relegation zone, while Everton are 11th in the table.

Steven Naismith: Everton forward joins Norwich City for £8.5m

By Simon Stone
BBC Sport

Steven Naismith has completed his £8.5m move from Everton to Norwich, signing a three-and-a-half year deal.

The 29-year-old forward, capped 41 times by Scotland, becomes the Canaries' fifth signing of the January transfer window.
He scored 25 goals in 123 appearances for the Toffees after signing on a free transfer from Rangers in 2012.
"I'm very happy to have signed because now I can concentrate on football," he told Norwich's website.
In August, Everton rejected a £7m bid from Norwich for Naismith - but he has started only four Premier League games this season and has not played since 28 December.
"Norwich have displayed class in the way they've done their business," Naismith added.
"They've shown how much they wanted me, which is great."
Norwich are 16th in the Premier League, two points above the relegation zone, and have also signed Matt Jarvis, Ivo Pinto, Timm Klose and Ben Godfrey this month.
