Portland Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy is expected to announce his retirement due to degenerative knees, perhaps as soon as Friday, sources have told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard.

A source briefed on discussions Friday evening said that the Boston Celtics are close to a deal with free agent power forward David West, who has been with the New Orleans Hornets since being drafted in 2003.

West, 31, was expected to be one of the top free agents in this year's class, but he is coming off of a torn ACL suffered late last season in a game against Utah. West has diligently rehabbed his injury in North Carolina last summer, but teams have been slow to make significant offers to him.

A two-time All-Star, West has averaged 16.4 points and 7.3 rebounds in his eight NBA seasons. If healthy, West would be a boon whether starting or coming off the bench for the Celtics, who acquired Brandon Bass earlier Friday from Orlando for forward Glen "Big Baby" Davis.

Bobcats open practice, re-sign free agent Brown

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Bobcats have re-signed restricted free agent Derrick Brown to a one-year deal.

The team announced the deal Friday after the New York Knicks withdrew their qualifying offer. Terms were not released. Brown played the majority of his two NBA seasons with Charlotte prior to being waived late last season.

Coach Paul Silas says he views Brown as a backup small forward and looks forward to getting him on the floor Saturday. The Bobcats only had nine players at their first practice Friday night.

Rookie Kemba Walker has yet to sign a contract, although Bobcats director of basketball operations Rod Higgins expects "a resolution shortly."

The same can't be said for fellow lottery pick Bismack Biyombo, who remains in a contract dispute with his former Spanish team.

Raptors sign big man Magloire

TORONTO (AP) -- The Toronto Raptors have signed Jamaal Magloire, making the center the team's first Canadian player in its 16-year history.

The club announced the signing Friday.

The 33-year-old Magloire, a 6-foot-11 Toronto native, has played 11 seasons in the NBA, averaging 7.5 points, 6.6 rebounds and 22.1 minutes in 646 regular-season games with the Charlotte/New Orleans, Milwaukee, Portland, New Jersey, Dallas and Miami.

He has averaged 7.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 19.8 minutes in 46 playoff games.
He was an All-Star in 2003-04 when he started all 82 games with New Orleans, averaging 13.6 points and 10.3 rebounds.

Sources: Vince Carter, Mavs close



The Dallas Mavericks are closing in on reuniting Vince Carter with his former New Jersey teammate Jason Kidd, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.

The full financial terms of the agreement weren't immediately known, but sources said Dallas was discussing a multiyear contract with Carter and hoped to have him signed by Saturday.

Carter was waived Friday by the Phoenix Suns, who had 72 hours starting at 2 p.m. ET to waive the eight-time All-Star and pay only $4 million of the $18 million that he's owed for the 2011-12 season.

Kings re-sign guard Thornton to 4-year deal

The Sacramento Kings have re-signed shooting guard Marcus Thornton, bolstering an already strong backcourt that will include Tyreke Evans and rookie Jimmer Fredette.

The team announced the signing Friday.

A person familiar with the decision says the deal is worth at least $31 million over four years. Thornton averaged 21.3 points in 23 games for the Kings after being acquired in a midseason trade with New Orleans.

The Kings also were finalizing a deal with free agent center Chuck Hayes. A second person familiar with that deal says Hayes and Sacramento have agreed to a $21.3 million, four-year deal.

Hayes averaged 3.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 17 minutes per game in six seasons with the Houston Rockets

Sacramento opens training camp Saturday.
