The Dutchman, who was named Sam Allardyce's successor in June, has endured a nightmare start losing all three of his Premier League games this season against Huddersfield, Liverpool and Swansea.

And though it is still early in the season Palace chiefs are already deeply concerned by goings on on and off the pitch.

De Boer has been trying to introduce a more expansive, passing and possession-based philosophy at Palace with a three-man defence.

But results and performances so far have led to concerns that he has underestimated the Premier League by trying to make his approach work with the players Palace have available.

There have also been disputes over recruitment with De Boer unhappy with the quality of some of the players recommended to him while some of his choices have been questioned by the hierarchy.

In particular Palace's attempts to strengthen their defence have led to tension.

De Boer could buy himself time by showing a willingness to adapt his approach though Palace's sources admit an early change of manager also can't be ruled out.

The situation is a repeat of the problems De Boer had at Inter Milan when he lasted just 85 days and 14 games and felt he wasn't given enough time to implement his methods.

Crystal Palace players already questioning Frank De Boer's management

Crystal Palace players have privately expressed their reservations about manager Frank de Boer, whose future at the club is in serious doubt after losing his first three Premier League matches.

There is, according to one senior player, uncertainty over De Boer’s tactics but also, crucially, disillusionment over his man-management since the former Ajax and Inter Milan coach arrived at Palace in late June to succeed Sam Allardyce.

The players have struggled to adapt to De Boer’s demands to play a more possession-based style built around three at the back while there has also been confusion over the 47-year-old’s communication skills.

De Boer arrived on a three-year contract but strain has also quickly developed between the Dutchman and Palace’s hierarchy. That became even more acute following the home defeat against Swansea City on Saturday which followed another loss, on the opening weekend, also at home, to newly-promoted Huddersfield Town and a defeat away to Liverpool.

It has not helped De Boer’s standing in the dressing room that he suggested the Palace players lacked courage following the Swansea defeat which he had said, pre-match, was a “must-win” game.

Dougie Freedman, who is a former Palace player and manager, was appointed the club’s sporting director only last week in a move that was apparently encouraged by De Boer who has always worked under that system.

However if Palace do decide to make a change it is likely that Freedman, giving his experience and connection with the supporters, will be asked to step in and take the team at least in the short-term.

Palace have the international break to consider what to do but it is possible that, even at this early stage in the season, De Boer could leave. Palace’s next match is away to Burnley on Sunday September 10 and it already feels like a fixture they cannot afford to lose.

Appointing De Boer was always something of a risk for Palace given he inherited a squad perhaps not designed to play the kind of football he appears to be insisting upon. De Boer arrived promising “evolution not revolution” but has so far proved rigid in his demands and tried to make significant changes too quickly which has de-stablised the team.

De Boer held talks with Palace on Monday which were ostensibly to drive through any new signings before the transfer window closes on Thursday but were expected to also include how he hopes to turn things around.

It has been pointed out to De Boer that he has lost the first three matches with an aggregate score of 6-0. Palace are yet to score a goal never mind win a point, with pretty much the same squad that beat Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea last season.

Frank de Boer appears to have one more game to save his Crystal Palace job after the Dutchman took training on Wednesday.

Palace chairman Steve Parish has held talks with De Boer, following the club’s dismal start to the season in which they have lost all three Premier League games without scoring a goal.

It is understood that Palace have thought long and hard about sacking De Boer during the international break, with the 47-year-old needing to indicate a willingness to change his approach to stand any chance of clinging on to his job.

But it seems De Boer will now get Sunday’s trip to Burnley to demonstrate that he can adapt and improve results, otherwise he will almost certainly be sacked.

De Boer is considering ditching the three-man defence he has played in the Premier League so far and reverting to a 4-3-3 formation to try to save his job at Turf Moor.

The fact he took training on Tuesday and Wednesday was seen by many players as an indication the 47-year-old will at least get the Burnley game.

De Boer’s weekly press conference, which had been set for Thursday, has been moved back to Friday to accommodate a new training schedule.

Unless he is sacked in the next 24 hours, De Boer will face awkward questions from the press regarding his team’s terrible start, his future and his relationship with Parish.

Dougie Freedman, who returned to Palace as Sporting Director on August 21, would be the favourite to take over from De Boer on an interim basis if Palace lose at Burnley.

De Boer has received support from his former assistant at Ajax, Jaap Stam, who said: “The club made the decision to get Frank because of his way of working and how he wanted to play.

“As a manager to go to England to work and get success straight away is very hard. Sometimes as a manager you need to have time to build something and create a certain atmosphere within the group that gets results.

“The only thing is; are we patient enough and do you get the time? That's not always the case.”
