Virgil van Dijk is waiting for Liverpool to make a £60million move for him following his explosive transfer request at Southampton.

Chelsea are set to rival the Reds’ interest in the Dutch defender but it is understood he favours a move to Anfield.

Van Dijk said in a statement: “I want to play European football again and challenge for major honours. As such I would like Southampton to consider the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist.”

The Holland defender, who signed a six-year deal last season, has hit out at the Saints’ repeated refusal to entertain “multiple” enquiries from top clubs for him.

He has also accused the club of leaking “private and personal conversations” and claimed they are trying to punish him with a fine without following the right procedures.

Southampton last night maintained there is no change in their position despite Van Dijk's transfer request. The club have not yet had any bids for him insist he is not for sale.

Liverpool backed away from their no.1 defensive target after being called out by the Saints for allegedly tapping him up. The Reds have since maintained they will not approach Van Dijk unless Southampton decide to sell.

In the meantime Van Dijk has been made to train away from the Saints first-team squad after making his wish to leave known to new boss Mauricio Pellegrino .

So Philippe Coutinho's future seems to be up in the air still, but what about Virgil van Dijk?

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino says the defender’s transfer request has not changed anything and the club do not intend to sell.

“Hopefully he can change his point of view because he is an important player and we need him focused on the club,” said Pellegrino.

"The club was clear from the beginning with the player. We cannot control every situation. Virgil is part of the club, he has a contract, now we are waiting."

Hope it was really a virus, not because he refused to play. As much as we wanted to get him, a player should still respect his contract and the fans.

Chelsea are also considering a bid for central defender Virgil van Dijk, who has asked to leave Southampton.

RESOLUTION TO VAN DIJK SAGA?

Virgil van Dijk’s long-running transfer saga at Southampton could soon come to a head, reports Yahoo Sport.

It’s being reported that Chelsea and Manchester City have stolen a march on Liverpool in the race to sign the Dutchman.

It’s understood the Saints are in line to receive up £70m if they part with their captain.

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger is adamant that Virgil van Dijk is "not for sale in this window", as keeping the defender is "the statement we need to make" at this juncture.

Liverpool heavily pursued a deal for Van Dijk at the start of the summer transfer window, but were forced to drop their interest after Southampton reported them to the Premier League for an alleged illegal approach.

Sky Sports News understands Chelsea and Manchester City are also interested in the defender, who signed a new long-term contract last year.

Last week, Van Dijk took matters into his own hands by handing in a transfer request but Krueger has reiterated that the Netherlands international is not going anywhere.

"Virgil is not for sale in this window and it's not personal," the chairman said, just days after the Gao family bought an 80 per cent stake in the club.

"It's not about him, it's about an overall much, much, much bigger picture - a change of course for Southampton.

"The first summer I was here five players went out and six went in, not counting academy. Second summer three went out, seven came in, and third summer five went out, five came in.

"Now it is one out and two in, and this is who we want to become.

"We want to mature, we want to be a team that can profit from synergies that create a much more attractive football and a better product for the fans, and gives us a chance to get back into Europe.

"That's one player in this whole equation of 25 and it is the visible one, but for us it's the principle and it's the path and it's the statement we need to make to get to a new space as a club.

"We are very, very adamant about carrying this through.

"The new partnership has completely and wholly backed our strategy and plan and on September 1 people will see how serious we were and are."

Van Dijk has been training away from the main group as he attempts to force an exit but Krueger is confident the defender can be integrated successfully back into the first-team squad and accepted, if not forgiven, by supporters.

"Well, first of all, they have experienced it here before on multiple occasions and it hasn't been a problem," Krueger said.

"I can go back to Morgan Schneiderlin in our first summer and I could list others, but let's not do that.

"We've had other examples of that where it was no problem, so I don't see that as a problem."

Chelsea ready to wait for Virgil Van Dijk as they step up transfer activity before window shuts

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia has stepped up the club’s bid to land at least three new signings before the transfer window shuts, but the Blues are prepared to play a waiting game over Southampton central defender Virgil van Dijk.

Granovskaia has scheduled a host of back-to-back meetings with clubs and agents this week over Chelsea’s remaining transfer business, with the Blues expecting to be busy over the final 10 days of the window.

Talks are ongoing over Chelsea’s interest in Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater, Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Everton’s Ross Barkley, despite his injury, and Southampton right-back Cedric Soares.

Inter Milan are braced for a bid from Chelsea for winger Antonio Candreva, while Paris Saint-Germain want to sell right-back Serge Aurier before the window shuts.

But Chelsea will only make a bid for Van Dijk if they get the green light from Southampton, who have insisted the Dutch central defender is not for sale.

Despite Van Dijk handing in a transfer request, Southampton have remained adamant he will not leave this summer after Liverpool were forced to apologise over their pursuit of the player.

Chelsea have made it clear to Southampton they remain interested in signing £60m-rated Van Dijk, but have also agreed to respect the stance of the St Mary’s club until any point that it changes.

It is hoped that by taking a soft approach that Chelsea will put themselves first in line to potentially land Van Dijk if and when Southampton’s stance changes, whether that is before the end of this window, in January or even next summer.
