Tottenham Hotspur release Emmanuel Adebayor

Tottenham have confirmed they have released striker Emmanuel Adebayor from his contract at the club by mutual consent.

The 31 year-old almost joined Aston Villa in the summer transfer window and that move could now be revived.

A statement on Spurs' official website on Sunday morning said: "We can confirm that we have reached a mutual agreement with Emmanuel Adebayor which will see him released from his contract with the club.

"We wish Emmanuel well for the future."

Adebayor was told he had no future at Spurs by manager Mauricio Pochettino and was not included in the Argentine's 25-man Premier League squad.

He had also not been allocated a squad number at White Hart Lane and had refused to go on international duty with Togo.

"I would not hesitate. If he had the desire to want to come and play football again, I would have taken him in a heartbeat," Sherwood said.

"We still have to respect his decision, whatever he makes. It's his - I can't influence it.

"Am I disappointed? I'm disappointed for him because he's not going to play. He's too good a talent - I've seen that first hand - to not play any football, but unfortunately I don't think there's any window open for him now.

"If he wanted to play in Qatar he would have gone there a long time ago. It's hard to say. I was going to say he's not in it for the money but, genuinely, he wants to play at the top level.

"It's not financial. It's easy to say that when you're on his money, but he would genuinely play for nothing. It's not his fault he's not part of their plans."

Spurs leave Adebayor out of Premier League squad



Tottenham have omitted Emmanuel Adebayor from their Premier League squad list.

The out-of-favour striker was not among the 21 names Spurs submitted, despite them being able to put down 25 players.

Togolese striker Adebayor was linked with a move away from White Hart Lane, but despite to stay much to the club's chagrin.

Emmanuel Adebayor: Tottenham striker will not be selected for Togo

Emmanuel Adebayor has been likened to "a bad date" by Togo coach Tom Saintfiet, who says he will not select the Tottenham striker.
Saintfiet said Adebayor, 31, failed to respond to a call-up for an African Cup qualifier with Djibouti on 4 September.
In June he threatened to miss the match after being stripped of the captaincy.
Saintfiet said: "If you are dating a woman who does not want to respond positively, then you must look for another woman."
Adebayor failed to reply to Togo management regarding last week's game by text message or email, according to Saintfiet.
"For me, it is clear that he is a player who does not want to play for his country anymore,'' added Saintfiet.
Adebayor is yet to feature for Spurs this season and has been left out of both their Premier League and Europa League squads.

Emmanuel Adebayor: Tottenham have 'no plans' for striker



Striker Emmanuel Adebayor has played his last game for Tottenham, head coach Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed.
The 31-year-old is yet to feature for Spurs this season after being left out of both their Premier League and Europa League squads.
"I think it's clear he's not in my idea, in my mind or in the plans for the future of Spurs," Pochettino said.
The club had been trying to terminate his contract, which has a year to run, but Adebayor wanted a £5m pay-off.
According to reports,  Tottenham had been willing to pay a portion of that amount, but the player is said to have refused the club's offer.
West Ham were keen to sign the forward, who moved to White Hart Lane on a permanent deal in 2012 for £5m.
Aston Villa wanted him on loan, but both were put off by his high wage demands.
Adebayor on a permanent deal in 2012 for £5m, has yet to feature for the club this season.
Meanwhile, Pochettino said £22m summer signing Son Heung-min will make his debut at Sunderland on Sunday.
"Son scored three goals in his game for the national team and arrived on Monday and trained very well all week," the Argentine said of the 23-year-old.
