Olivier Giroud to stay at Arsenal until Alexis Sanchez and Thomas Lemar futures are resolved

Jeremy Wilson, deputy football correspondent
10 JULY 2017 • 10:30PM
Arsene Wenger is refusing to sell Olivier Giroud until he has a clearer idea of whether Alexis Sanchez will stay or if Monaco can be persuaded to sell Thomas Lemar.

The Arsenal manager is also confident that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will not leave this summer, despite the current deadlock in negotiations to potentially extend a contract that expires next year.

Both Giroud and Oxlade-Chamberlain are in the 25-man Arsenal squad that will arrive in Sydney on Tuesday morning when Wenger will face media questions for the first time this summer.

There is uncertainty over a long list of players, although it is the Sanchez situation that will go furthest to shaping Arsenal’s transfer strategy. Wenger has already signed striker Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon in a club record £52 million deal and has also been trying to buy Lemar but, with Monaco turning down respective bids of ?40 million and ?45 million, a deal appears unlikely.

Giroud wants regular first-team football ahead of next summer’s World Cup and is a target of Marseille, Everton and West Ham United but Wenger is unwilling to sanction a deal now and risk being left short of strikers later this summer if it is decided that Sanchez cannot be allowed to run his contract down.

Whereas Sanchez is in the final year of his contract and has been refusing an offer worth around £275,000-a-week, Giroud is not out of contract for another two years. Wenger also does not want to lose the attacking variety that Giroud provides, even if he is unlikely to feature in the first-choice starting team.

The situation is also complicated by the unusually high number of players now in the final year of their contracts. Oxlade-Chamberlain and Arsenal have so far been unable to find any agreement but there is a feeling still that a deal could be sorted next season if he continues his recent progress.

Mesut Ozil’s contract offer also remain unsigned but, like Oxlade-Chamberlain, all sides seem more relaxed about the prospect of going into the final year and still trying to strike a deal. Arsenal also know that the options to sell Ozil and Oxlade-Chamberlain are likely to be limited. Manchester City, Chelsea and Bayern Munich are all interested in Sanchez and so the financial hit of holding him to his contract is potentially far greater.

Sanchez reached the final of the Confederations Cup with Chile and is not due back for pre-season training until later in the month. Carl Jenkinson, Kieran Gibbs, Lucas Perez, Wojciech Szczesny and Mathieu Debuchy have also not travelled with Arsenal and are all likely to leave this summer.

There is also doubt over Jack Wilshere but he is missing the trip to Australia and China as he continues his recovery from a broken leg.

Olivier Giroud admits he is considering quitting Arsenal as Everton, West Ham, Marseille and AC Milan circle
Giroud, 30, could leave the Emirates as he fears the arrival of £52m record signing Alexandre Lacazette has put his Arsenal future in doubt

Olivier Giroud has admitted he is considering quitting Arsenal this summer.

Giroud, 30, could leave the Emirates as he fears the arrival of £52m record signing Alexandre Lacazette has put his Arsenal future in doubt.

Everton, West Ham, Marseille and AC Milan are all interested in Giroud who knows he must regularly this season or risk losing his place in the France squad for next summer’s World Cup.

The Frenchman, who signed a new three year deal in January, even spoke in the past tense as if his career at Arsenal is coming to an end after joining in 2012.

Giroud, talking at the club’s launch of their new third choice kit in Sydney, said: “It (leaving) is an option to be honest with you.

“I’m here in pre-season, I wanted to travel. Some people asked me if I am going to travel or not and of course, I am Arsenal player and for the moment I am here so I just want to prepare well for the season and we will see later.

“But it is true that I really enjoyed my five years with Arsenal. I’m still an Arsenal player for the moment so I try to be professional. No matter what happens, I did my job on the pitch.

“It’s been five years that I’ve been here. It could be my sixth one. I had an amazing welcome from the fans and from the club and it has been five amazing years for me.

“I won’t forget it, no matter what happens. We will see about my future but I am still an Arsenal player for the moment.”

Giroud has fought for his place in the past and Arsene Wenger has insisted he does not want him to leave with Arsenal likely to ask for in excess of £35m if he does go.

Everton have been leading the hunt for him but Marseille believe they may be able to tempt him back to France. But Giroud insisted if he does stay then he is not afraid to battle with Lacazette who he currently keeps out of the France starting XI.

Giroud added: “It’s always nice for the club to get several strikers with different qualities and it is always nice for competition and it helps you to step up every time.

“I really enjoyed all my time at the Arsenal and I scored a few nice goals but always like to speak about the team, the team spirit and the team work.”

Giroud’s potential replacement Lacazette has already admitted his admiration for Arsenal’s French connection and the likes of Thierry Henry as a club legend.

West Ham are no longer interested in signing Olivier Giroud, Sky sources understand.

The Hammers decided to end talks after they were told they were not Giroud's first choice destination.

Everton hopes of signing Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud handed boost by Borussia Dortmund

Matt Law, football news correspondent
19 JULY 2017 • 11:40AM
Everton’s pursuit of Olivier Giroud has been boosted by Borussia Dortmund’s claim that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will not be sold this summer.

Giroud had hoped to replace Aubameyang at Dortmund after being pushed down the Arsenal pecking order by Alexandre Lacazette.

But Dortmund’s declaration that Aubameyang, who was on the list of strikers Chelsea are considering to replace Diego Costa, will not be sold casts doubt over the prospect of the German club making a bid for Giroud.

Arsenal will demand around £20 million for Giroud and Everton believe they are second on the list of the Frenchman’s preferred destinations. West Ham United have given up on Giroud, while Marseille are yet to launch a bid for the 30-year-old, which will give Everton further hope they are second in the queue behind Dortmund.

Everton want Giroud to replace Romelu Lukaku, but are also interested in Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke, who would be significantly more expensive, and Bournemouth’s Josh King.

Giroud is currently on tour with Arsenal, but has already admitted he could leave the FA Cup holders this summer.

Speaking in Sydney last week, Giroud said: “It (leaving) is an option to be honest with you.

“I’m here in pre-season, I wanted to travel. Some people asked me if I am going to travel or not and of course, I am an Arsenal player and for the moment I am here so I just want to prepare well for the season and we will see later.

“It is true that I really enjoyed my five years with Arsenal. I'm still an Arsenal player for the moment so I try to be professional. No matter what happens, I did my job on the pitch.

“It's been five years that I've been here. It could be my sixth one. I had an amazing welcome from the fans and from the club and it has been five amazing years for me.

“I won't forget it, no matter what happens. We will see about my future but I am still an Arsenal player for the moment.”

On the future of Aubameyang, who Giroud hoped to replace, Dortmund sporting director said: “We have decided that Auba will stay with Borussia Dortmund. The transfer window is closed as far as he is concerned.”
