The Turkish giant's sporting director Cenk Ergun has revealed that negotiations have opened to bring the Belgian to Istanbul.

Fellaini has been at Old Trafford since 2013, when former boss David Moyes carried him along with him from Everton for £27.5m.

The midfielder played 47 times for United last season as they lifted the EFL Cup and Europa League.

Jose Mourinho oversaw a modest renaissance for the big Belgian last season and is believed to value his contribution.

But, with the Portuguese poised to add another midfielder - he has been linked with Tottenham's Eric Dier, Chelsea's Nemanja Matic and and latterly Anderlecht man Leander Dendoncker - Fellaini could find himself further down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Ergun told Turkish outlet Ajansspor : “Fellaini will leave Manchester United and he is now in our radar.

“We are in talks with Fellaini. We have made an approach, we are close and if we get Fellaini we will end our pursuit of [Villarreal’s Alfred] N’Diaye.

“We need a player like Fellaini who can move around in midfield.”
