'VILLA TO CONFIRM TERRY'

Aston Villa are set to confirm the signing of John Terry on Monday, according to the Telegraph.

The paper claims the former England and Chelsea captain has agreed an initial 12-month deal worth a basic £60,000 a week with bonuses that could take his overall package to more than £4m a year.

Terry received contract proposals from clubs including Galatasaray, West Brom and Swansea but has opted to join Steve Bruce's side, says Sunday's report.

John Terry is poised to be confirmed as an Aston Villa player on Monday, in a huge coup for Steve Bruce.

Terry has agreed to sign for Villa on an initial 12-month deal to extend his playing career in the Championship, after rejecting at least 10 offers from around the world.

The former England and Chelsea captain, 36, has received contract proposals from clubs including Galatasaray, West Bromwich Albion and Swansea but is joining Villa after extensive talks in the past few days.

It is understood his contract will be worth a basic £60,000 a week with bonuses taking the overall package above £4 million a year.

Terry  left Stamford Bridge at the end of last season after more than two decades with the club and it is understood he was reluctant to face them again in the Premier League.

Bruce met with Terry in Portugal last month and confidence has been growing over the past fortnight that a deal would be done. Villa's squad flew out to Portugal for a pre-season training camp on Saturday and Terry is expected to join them in the next 48 hours.

Villa are also working on other signings and will have further talks with Manchester United this week over a potential deal for goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

Stoke's Jon Walters and Glenn Whelan are also on Bruce's list of targets as he bids to assemble a squad capable of promotion from the Championship.

Sky sources: John Terry will not have a coaching role at Aston Villa, as part of the contract that he is expected to sign later today.

Terry has agreed a one-year deal, with manager Steve Bruce asking him to focus on playing a full part in the Championship season, and helping the team mount a challenge for promotion.

There are now just one or two minor contractual issues to finalise, we understand, before Terry is confirmed as a Villa player. That confirmation should come within the next 24 hours.

The deal is one of the most lucrative ever signed by a player in the Championship, and could earn the former England captain over £4m if Villa win promotion to the Premier League.
