Manchester City are set to begin talks with Tottenham over the potential signing of Kyle Walker, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports News HQ understands that City's approach could come as early as this week, following England's international against France on Tuesday.

Manager Pep Guardiola is thought to be confident of landing the England right-back and hopes to strike a deal for as little over £40m as possible.

But Tottenham, who gave Walker a new five-year contract last September, are under no pressure to sell the 27-year-old and are understood to value Walker at closer to £50m.

City are certainly unaware of any increase in Spurs' valuation towards £60m, which was cited by several newspapers over the weekend.

Sky sources claim Walker is relaxed about his future, and is not agitating for a move away from a club at which he has spent the past eight years and harbours a deep affection for.

But he is understood to have been unhappy at not being selected for particular games towards the end of the season, as manager Mauricio Pochettino rotated him with Kieran Trippier.

Trippier, who is now rivalling Walker for the England right-back role, improved as the season has progressed and has proven himself a long-term first-choice in the position for Spurs.

City are therefore hoping to tempt Walker to the Etihad by offering to make him their primary right-back.

Guardiola has made signing new full-backs a priority if his this summer, and has registered interest in left-backs Benjamin Mendy of Monaco and Southampton's Ryan Bertrand.

Sky Sports News HQ understands that Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez is also a key target, with City already having signed goalkeeper Ederson and attacker Bernardo Silva, and are close to landing Mexican winger Hirving Lozano.

Pep Guardiola is growing frustrated over Manchester City's pursuit of Tottenham defender Kyle Walker.
The clubs have opened discussions about the England international but are still some £10million apart in their valuations.
City have proposed an offer of around £40million for Guardiola's main target while Tottenham want closer to £50m.

City set out their intentions for the summer with the £43m signing of Bernardo Silva from Monaco followed by the £34.7m arrival of Ederson from Benfica.
Dani Alves is expected to sign on a free while talks are ongoing with Monaco for Benjamin Mendy and with Arsenal for Alexis Sanchez.
However, Walker has long been Guardiola's first option for right-back and the Spanish tactician was hopeful of getting players in place quickly ahead of a return to pre-season.
Talks though are continuing to stumble over respective valuations.
Walker knows he can treble his salary at City and is keen to link up with Guardiola yet Tottenham's price reflects their view of him as a player still at the top of his game.
An ever-inflating market has seen Southampton value Virgil van Dijk at £60m to £70m so £50m is in accordance with Walker being in the 2016-17 PFA team of the year and a regular England international.


Guardiola was in good spirits at the Icons of Football golf tournament at the Belfry on Friday where he was playing for Darren Clarke's Rest of the World side against Lee Westwood's England.
He will be hoping for a breakthrough in talks between City and Tottenham this week though as his new squad takes shape. Guardiola spoke openly about his disappointment at City's failure to win a trophy last season but, along with the club's owners, expects to mount a greater challenge on all fronts next term.
Prospective addition Dani Alves, for his part, when quizzed on Brazilian TV about his chances of joining City, said: 'City my next team? Well, everyone knows my admiration for Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City eager to tie up deals for Dani Alves, Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy

Manchester City hope to wrap up the signing of three full-backs before they fly to the United States for the start of their pre-season tour next month but Pep Guardiola is prepared to play a waiting game over Arsenal forward Alexis Sánchez.

Dani Alves could be the first of those through the door, with City aiming to get a deal for the Brazil right-back over the line this week. Alves, 34, is a free agent after terminating his contract with Juventus and is expected to sign at least a two-year deal with City.

City are still haggling with Tottenham Hotspur and Monaco over fees for England right-back Kyle Walker and France left-back Benjamin Mendy but hope to have both players in place before Guardiola and his squad fly to Houston on July 17. City face Manchester United in the International Champions Cup three days later.

Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, has been holding out for up to £50 million for Walker, but with the player keen to move to City and Spurs prepared to do a deal, a compromise is expected. City may end up paying around £45m including add-ons.

City have already signed Portugal playmaker Bernardo Silva from Monaco for £43.6 m but the French champions have been demanding a similar fee for Mendy, which was significantly more than City wanted to pay. Mendy could end up costing close to the £34.7 m City paid Benfica for goalkeeper Ederson Moraes.

A move for a second left-back – and fourth full-back in total – following the departures of Pablo Zabaleta, Bacary Sagna and Gaël Clichy is not thought to be a priority with Guardiola satisfied that Aleksandar Kolarov, who has 12 months left on his contract, can provide cover at left-back as well as centre-half. Kolarov has raised the prospect of returning to Lazio when he leaves City.

The situation at centre-half is also fluid with City having balked at the £60m valuation Southampton placed on Holland centre-half Virgil van Dijk and given little encouragement in their pursuit of Juventus’s Leonardo Bonucci.

Guardiola is thought to be more relaxed about Sánchez and prepared to see how that situation pans out as the summer progresses.

Arsenal are reluctant to sell the £50m-rated Chile forward to a Premier League rival and are still trying to persuade the player, who is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract, to sign a new long-term contract that would make him the highest paid player in their history.

But Sánchez, who has also attracted strong interest from Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris St-Germain, is thought to want to stay in England and favours a move to City. Unless Sánchez agreed to stay or move overseas, Arsenal’s hand could be forced unless they would write off a £50 million asset and lose him for nothing next summer, when he could join any club of his choice.

Manchester City have opened talks with Tottenham about the potential signing of defender Kyle Walker.

Negotiations for the England international are at an early stage, and no fee has been agreed.

Fellow full-back Kieran Tripper is reportedly set to sign a new five-year deal with Spurs, which could pave the way for Walker to move to City.

Walker, 27, has made 183 Premier League appearances since joining Spurs from Sheffield United in 2009.

He was also picked in the 2016-17 Premier League team of the year.

City boss Pep Guardiola released three full-backs at the end of last season, including both right-sided players - Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna.

He is yet to bring in a replacement, though he is keen to sign Dani Alves, whose exit from Juventus was officially confirmed by the Serie A champions on Thursday.

It is understood Sheffield United have a sell-on clause of 10% of any fee above the estimated £3m they sold Walker for eight years ago.

Tottenham are prepared to sell one player from their first-choice XI – Kyle Walker, the right-back who is a target for Manchester City, but negotiations have become protracted as Levy believes he is in a powerful position, which is always bad news for the potential buyer.

Levy wants at least £50m and feels it is fair in terms of the market. The 27-year-old was the best right-back in the Premier League last season, according to the Professional Footballers’ Association, who named him in their team of the year. Walker is entering his prime years; he is tried and tested in English football and his Englishness adds a further premium. City, meanwhile, look to have missed out on another right-back target, with Dani Alves likely to join Paris Saint-Germain.

Mauricio Pochettino could replace Walker, who has four years to run on his contract, with Kieran Trippier and the Spurs manager could use the fee from the sale to strengthen his squad. Pochettino would be less willing to cash in on selling Dier.
