Jon Walters: Burnley agree £3m deal to sign striker from Stoke

Burnley have agreed a fee that could reach £3m for Stoke City's Republic of Ireland forward Jon Walters.

The former Ipswich striker, 33, has spent seven years at Stoke, scoring 43 goals in 226 Premier League appearances.

Burnley had one offer for him turned down last week.

Walters has a year left on the Stoke contract he signed in 2015 but is thought to be keen to link up with Burnley manager Sean Dyche.

Clarets striker Andre Gray, who has reportedly rejected a new contract, has been linked with a £15m move to fellow Premier League side West Ham.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes will not stand in Jonathan Walters' way after accepting he wants to join the Irish contingent at Burnley.

"It seems that maybe Jon could take the option of a move to Burnley," Hughes told the Sentinel. "I haven't had the opportunity to speak to him about it.

"I think it's something that maybe he wants to make happen, but irrespective of that, if it falls through we would be more than happy because Jon coming back to the club would be fine.

"Maybe at this point of his career Jon feels that he needs a bit more security in terms of length of contract which maybe we weren't prepared to match what he's got on the table."

Jon Walters: Burnley sign Republic of Ireland striker from Stoke

Burnley have signed Republic of Ireland striker Jon Walters from Stoke City for a fee that could reach £3m.

Walters, 33, has signed a two-year deal after spending seven years with the Potters, scoring 62 goals in 269 appearances.

He becomes Burnley's second summer signing after full-back Charlie Taylor joined from Championship side Leeds.

Walters' move means the Clarets now have five Republic of Ireland internationals in their squad.

He joins defenders Stephen Ward and Kevin Long, and midfielders Jeff Hendrick and Robbie Brady at Turf Moor.
