Newcastle in chaos as John Carver remains in charge despite offering to QUIT the club following heavy defeat to Leicester City
By LAURIE WHITWELL FOR THE DAILY MAIL
PUBLISHED: 21:32 GMT, 4 May 2015 | UPDATED: 21:37 GMT, 4 May 2015

Newcastle United descended into chaos on Monday night as it emerged that head coach John Carver offered to quit after Saturday’s loss to Leicester.

Carver told his managing director Lee Charnley he was prepared to step aside after admitting the players may not be listening to his instructions.

But when Derby’s Steve McClaren rejected the chance to take charge for the remaining three Barclays Premier League games of the season, Carver’s offer was turned down.

Instead, he will carry on despite a record of eight defeats in a row that has left Newcastle only two points above the relegation zone.

Sportsmail can also reveal that Carver had a bust-up with his team at half-time during the 3-0 loss at the King Power Stadium.

McClaren has long been expected to take over at St James’ Park in the summer but it emerged on Monday he does not want the job now.

Newcastle United interim manager John Carver pictured leaving the club's training ground this afternoon (MON), following a meeting in the aftermath of the Magpies' 0-3 defeat away at Leicester City over the weekend.

McClaren talked to Derby chief executive Sam Rush and gave further assurances that he wants to remain in charge next season to mount another promotion bid. He will address his players individually today to discuss summer plans.

A Newcastle statement issued on Monday confirmed Carver would continue. ‘Following the result on Saturday, there has been two days of frank dialogue with John Carver and senior players,’ it read.

‘The outcome is that the board, John Carver, his staff and players are absolutely focused on our current situation and the three hugely important fixtures that remain.

‘All parties accept responsibility for the current situation but are determined, together, to ensure this club — your club — retains its Premier League status.’

Newcastle fans reacted with astonishment to the club’s statement.

Mark Jensen, editor of the Newcastle fans’ magazine themag.co.uk, said: ‘Just when you think things can’t get any worse the club put a feeble statement out saying it’s business as usual. I personally don’t know a single Newcastle fan who thinks John Carver is the right man for the job, but if you talk about a change you have to question who in their right mind would want to walk into this total mess.

‘This has been coming for a long time. It is a carbon copy of last season when we had a few more points on the board, and the season before that we also nearly went down. If other clubs continue to pick up points I think we will go down.

'I don’t think any fans have hope of getting any more points. If we stay up it will only be due to the shortcomings of others.’

Carver will somehow have to unite a fragmented dressing room for three crucial fixtures against West Bromwich, Queens Park Rangers and West Ham.

Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini has penned an open letter apologising to fans for the team's recent performances.

John Carver's men have now lost eight Premier League games on the bounce and are in serious danger of relegation.

I don't usually speak publicly too often, but today I feel the responsibility to talk to all of you for several reasons in which you are involved, every bit as much as we are as players, staff, directors and every person that works for the Club.

Firstly, on behalf of the squad we would like to apologise for the moment we are going through. Needless to say this is not anything intentional.

Neither players nor staff would like to be in the position that we are in at the moment. This is something that has happened for many reasons and right now there is no time to look back and correct those mistakes.

The time we have left to turn around this situation is short but after the end of the season we will try to learn from the mistakes we made so that we don't have to go through this again.

This is as painful for us as it is for you, because when this team comes onto the pitch we do so with the intention of winning and to defend not just the colours of this Club, not just our shirt, but also to represent thousands of fans, the whole city.

We do so understanding that a victory at the weekend means a week of joy for this city that breathes, lives and loves football like no other city in England.

Today we are in a delicate situation, one that we have been through before, and it is one of the most uncomfortable situations in the world of football.

Uncomfortable because this Club doesn't deserve to be in this position, a position that puts its status at risk. And this is what I want to highlight; this is the most important reason for my letter.

Players and staff have come together in order to leave all past problems aside and to focus 100 per cent on the three 'cup finals' that we have left.

I would like to make a call to all fans today to also leave aside all differences, all different opinions, anything that divides us as people who love this Club.

On Saturday, please come to St. James' Park, create a great atmosphere, support the team more than ever, because at the end of the day what matters the most here is Newcastle United Football Club.

Years will pass and so will players, directors, coaches and managers, but what is always going to be there is yourselves, your children, your grandchildren.

I am also a fan and I understand how badly you are hurting, but I think that the best fans are those who are there for their Club in the worst of situations.

Today we need you more than ever. In these three games we need to be together, we need to be united, to be a family - a family that fights together against adversity, a family that strives to achieve the success that you and this Club deserve.

The players are committed to this and if you stay with us, if you join us, we are going to fight together for our black and white family.

Thank you from my heart,

Your captain

Fabricio Coloccini.

Relegation would help Newcastle - loanee Gael Bigirimana

Falling out of the Premier League this season could boost Newcastle's long-term prospects, loanee Gael Bigirimana has claimed.

The 21-year-old has had a frustrating spell since moving to Rangers on a loan deal from Newcastle in January, not featuring for the Scottish Championship side after being diagnosed with a mystery illness.

However, with the Magpies in danger of relegation after a shocking run of eight successive defeats, the Burundi-born England youth cap has revealed his controversial thoughts on what he believes might actually end up helping his parent club.

His opinions might not sit too comfortably with many Newcastle fans, but Bigirimana told Sky Sports News HQ: "This might put me in trouble but you look at what happened to Southampton five or six years ago. (The Saints went into administration and were relegated to League One in 2009).

"Sometimes as a club you need everything to be reviewed – its foundation and the structure.

"I don’t want them to go down and get relegated. Nobody wants that to happen but it’s all about the future."

Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Leicester was Newcastle’s eighth in succession and left them two points above the relegation zone with an inferior goal difference to four of the five teams below.

Newcastle’s final games see them travel to relegation rivals QPR, either side of home games against West Brom and West Ham.

Bigirimana was one of five Magpies youngsters signed by former Rangers chief executive Derek Llambias in the January transfer window without being put through a medical - even though Bigirimana reportedly knew he was sick before signing for Rangers.
