Charlie Austin and Richard Dunne could be out for the rest of the season after the Queens Park Rangers duo left Loftus Road on crutches on Saturday.

Austin, the club's top goalscorer, is understood to have broken a bone in his right foot following the 1-0 defeat against Southampton that left QPR second bottom of the Barclays Premier League.

The 25-year-old played the full 90 minutes against Southampton but was in discomfort as he left the ground.



Dunne twisted his knee and had to be substituted in the 83rd minute after a block tackle on Southampton's Sadio Mane, who scored the winner for the visitors in the 93rd minute.

QPR would not discuss the extent of the damage to either player but Austin and Dunne will undergo scans ahead of Tuesday night's visit to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland.

Caretaker manager Chris Ramsey expects to remain in temporary charge, though Tim Sherwood is still favourite to take over following Harry Redknapp's departure.

Austin's absence would be nothing short of a disaster for the struggling club after the England hopeful contributed 13 goals in the Premier league this season – just one behind Manchester City's Sergio Aguero and four behind Chelsea's Diego Costa.

Premier League: QPR's Charlie Austin and Richard Dunne injured in Southampton loss

QPR’s Premier League survival hopes have been dealt a blow by injuries to key duo Charlie Austin and Richard Dunne in the 1-0 defeat to Southampton.

Southampton’s Sadio Mane struck in added-time in west London to condemn QPR to their fifth successive defeat in all competitions.

And QPR’s misery was compounded by the double injury blow to Austin and Dunne who both left Loftus Road on crutches following the defeat.

It is unclear at this stage how long the pair will be out for, but both face scans to determine the extent of their respective injuries.

The results are expected to be known in the next 48 hours amid fears that both players have suffered long-term injuries.

Dunne suffered a knee injury and was replaced by Eduardo Varga seven minutes from time.

QPR’s 13-goal top-scorer Austin played the full 90 minutes but it has emerged that the striker sustained a foot injury.

Premier League: QPR relief after scans reveal only 'bruising' for striker Charlie Austin

QPR have received a major boost after scans revealed the injury suffered by striker Charlie Austin against Southampton is not as serious as had been feared.

Austin, who has scored 13 goals in his first Premier League campaign, was seen leaving Loftus Road on crutches with reports that he might have broken a bone in his foot.

There were suggestions he, as well as defender Richard Dunne, could be out for the season, with Dunne having been substituted when he sustained a knee injury.

Austin played the full 90 minutes but looked to be in discomfort at the end of the game, which saw Sadio Mane score a late winner for Ronald Koeman's Champions League hopefuls.

The forward will definitely miss their clash with Sunderland in midweek but could return before the end of the month.

A tweet from QPR's official feed said: "@chazaustin9 has suffered bruising to his right foot and will miss Tuesday's trip to @SunderlandAFC. Nothing too serious #QPR."

Austin later confirmed the good news, posting: "Scan done. Delighted to say I've NOT broken a bone in my foot! Hopefully back in a week or two!"

INJURY UPDATE – RICHARD DUNNE SUFFERS MCL INJURY

Dunne and Onuoha sustain injuries, while Austin misses Sunderland trip

DEFENDER Richard Dunne is set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines owing to a knee injury.

The Irishman sustained a medial cruciate ligament injury to his right knee in the R’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton on Saturday and is expected to be out for up to three months.

Meanwhile, fellow defender Nedum Onuoha sustained a hamstring injury against the Saints and will be sidelined for approximately 3-4 weeks.

However, there is good news regarding Charlie Austin, who – despite leaving Loftus Road on crutches yesterday – has only suffered heavy bruising to his right foot.

The R’s top-scorer will miss Tuesday’s trip to Sunderland but is likely to be available for our clash against Hull City on Saturday 21st February.
