Andy Carroll: West Ham striker injured against Southampton



West Ham's Andy Carroll faces several weeks out after leaving Wednesday's draw at Southampton on crutches.

The 26-year-old striker was playing for the first time since suffering a knee injury on 31 January.

"He got kicked in the back of the knee and felt something wrong," said Hammers boss Sam Allardyce.

Carroll was forced to continue playing in the 0-0 draw at St Mary's, given West Ham, already down to 10 men, had made all three substitutions.

"He stayed up and was a nuisance," said Allardyce. "I just hope that staying on hasn't done any more damage."

Hammers goalkeeper Adrian was sent off on 61 minutes after handling the ball outside his box.

Allardyce also said the club cannot sign former Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra as a free agent because of "Fifa regulations".

Allardyce added: "We have negotiated for weeks to get the right deal and, now we've got it, we find we can't get the right paperwork and the right clearance, so we have wasted his time and our time."

West Ham striker Andy Carroll will miss between four and six weeks with a torn medial knee ligament.

Manager Sam Allardyce confirmed the details of the injury in his Friday press conference.

Carroll left Southampton on crutches on Wednesday night following West Ham's 0-0 draw, in which the striker came on as a second-half substitute.

"A full diagnosis on Andy is yet to come and we should have that today but it looks like a few weeks," said Allardyce.

"The medial ligament on the inside of his knee has a little tear from a fairly innocuous collision with the defender.

"If we're lucky it could be four to six weeks. It's a big blow for him and us but one we've got to cope with.

"It is traumatic when someone is going through a period when in a short time they overcome one injury and another occurs.

“It’s a completely new injury. We thought it might be a recurrence of the old one but unfortunately for Andy it is a new one and it looks a lot more serious.”

West Ham United striker Andy Carroll has had surgery on a knee injury that is expected to keep him out for the rest of the season.

Carroll suffered medial ligament damage in Wednesday's 0-0 draw at Southampton.

The 26-year-old was forced to stay on the pitch because West Ham were down to 10 men and had made all three of their substitutions.

On Tuesday, Carroll tweeted: "Today's surgery went great and glad to be put back together into one piece!"

He added: "Now I just need some entertainment to keep me occupied! #bored."

Carroll, out for most of last season with an Achilles problem, missed the first three months of this campaign after injuring ankle ligaments in New Zealand in pre-season.

Since returning in November he had scored five goals in 14 games.

The former Newcastle and Liverpool forward has won nine England caps, and scored twice, but has not played for the national team since a World Cup qualifier against San Marino in October 2012.

Carroll has only started in 43.4% of the club's games since joining in 2012 - initially on loan, before his £15m move a year later.

West Ham are currently eighth in the Premier League table with 38 points from 25 games and were knocked out of the FA Cup courtesy of a 4-0 fifth-round defeat to West Brom on Saturday.
