Referee Michael Oliver to make final call on Diego Costa 'stamp' ahead of Chelsea-Manchester City game



Referee Michael Oliver will have the final say on whether Diego Costa is banned for this weekend's game against Manchester City.

The Chelsea striker was accused of stamping on Liverpool's Emre Can at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night as his side came through a tight second leg to reach the Capital One Cup final.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers afterwards said Costa was lucky to escape punishment, a view shared by Thierry Henry and Jamie Redknapp in the Sky Sports studio but not by Jose Mourinho.

Henry suggested "the ref didn’t see it, the linesman didn’t see it and the fourth official didn’t see it", and if that is the case Costa could yet be ruled out of the huge Saturday Night Football game against champions City.

Oliver will be asked by the Football Association on Wednesday whether he or any of his colleagues saw the incident: if the answer is 'no' that will open up the possibility of retrospective punishment.

Under Premier League rules an independent three-man panel assesses video replays before deciding on any action, but League Cup regulations are different and the final decision is the referee's.

That means Oliver would be asked to assess the incident retrospectively.

If in his judgement Costa was guilty of a straight red-card offence the player would automatically be banned for league games against City, Aston Villa and Everton.

Costa would have until 6pm the following day to contest the decision, and a hearing would then be fast-tracked. Whatever the outcome, there would be a resolution before the City game.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa charged over 'stamp' on Liverpool's Emre Can

Diego Costa has been charged with violent conduct over his clash with Liverpool's Emre Can on Tuesday night.

A statement from the Football Association confirmed Costa's alleged stamp was missed by all four officials on duty for the second leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final.

Referee Michael Oliver has since told the FA he would have sent off Costa if he had seen the incident, and he now faces a three-match ban if the charge is proven.

That would sideline Chelsea's top scorer for the huge Saturday Night Football game against champions Manchester City, and subsequent matches against Aston Villa and Everton.

He has until 6pm on Thursday either to accept or contest the charge, and a final outcome will be reached before the weekend.

Costa will not be punished over a separate incident involving Martin Skrtel which was also reviewed by the match officials.

Diego Costa to contest 'stamp' charge over Emre Can incident

Chelsea striker Diego Costa will contest the violent conduct charge he faces over an alleged stamp on Liverpool's Emre Can on Tuesday.

The Spain international was charged by the Football Association on Wednesday over the incident.

He is being charged for the first of two alleged stamps that were not seen at the time by referee Michael Oliver.

Costa also appeared to stand on central defender Martin Skrtel in the Liverpool penalty box in the second half.

The first-half incident involving Can took place close to the technical area and prompted an angry response from the Liverpool player.

The FA will review the evidence, and the matter will be resolved on Friday.

Should the forward be found guilty, the first of a three-match ban would come in Chelsea's top-of-the-table clash against Manchester City on Saturday.

It is understood Costa is appealing with the full backing of Chelsea.

Chelsea cancelled their pre-match news conference for the game against City on Thursday afternoon.

Costa could also miss games against Aston Villa and Everton.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said after the League Cup semi-final: "He could easily hurdle over the young player and he directs his studs right on to his ankle, which could have been nasty."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said after the game that he feels the Brazil-born Spain international is being targeted unfairly.

The Blues, who won 2-1 on aggregate, will face London rivals Tottenham in the final at Wembley on Sunday, 1 March.

Diego Costa: Chelsea striker gets three-match ban for stamp

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been banned for three matches for stamping on Liverpool's Emre Can.

The 26-year-old will miss Saturday's Premier League clash with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge as well as games against Aston Villa and Everton.

The Football Association charge, which Costa denied, related to an incident in the 12th minute of Tuesday's League Cup semi-final second leg in London.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho said the incident was "absolutely accidental".

Costa, a £32m signing from Atletico Madrid, has scored 17 goals in 19 Premier League games this season.

The incident, which occurred in front of the dugouts but was missed by the match officials, was subsequently reviewed on video by referee Michael Oliver.

Chelsea cannot appeal the decision reached by the independent commission hearing.
