Jermain Defoe: Toronto striker joins Sunderland

Toronto FC and England striker Jermain Defoe has completed his move to Sunderland, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal with the club.

The 32-year-old played alongside and then under Sunderland manager Gus Poyet during the first of the former England striker's two spells at Tottenham.

Poyet said: "His exceptional goal-scoring record speaks for itself."

United States international Jozy Altidore, 25, moves back to the MLS with Toronto as part of the deal.

Defoe could make his debut against Spurs at White Hart Lane on Saturday if international clearance is - as expected - received by 13.45 GMT.

"It is a great club and I've always enjoyed coming up here and playing against Sunderland because of the stadium and the supporters," the striker said.

"It is a great place to play and I'm really looking forward to it."

Defoe, capped 55 times by England, is 14th on the list of all-time Premier League goalscorers, with 124 from his time with Spurs, West Ham and Portsmouth.

He scored 11 times in 16 games in his first season with Toronto and had been training with Tottenham during the MLS close season.

Sunderland currently 16th in the Premier League, with only Aston Villa having scored fewer than their 18 goals.

They have won only three of their 21 league matches this season and collected just one point from their past four games.

Transfer news: Sunderland hold talks with Toronto over deal for Jermain Defoe

Sunderland have had discussions with Toronto FC over a possible deal for Jermain Defoe, according to Sky sources.

As many as 10 Premier League clubs are interested in signing Defoe during January's transfer window, and the England striker has been training with old club Tottenham.

Spurs are not among his suitors, but Sunderland are as they aim to improve a record of just 18 goals in 21 league games this season.

Contrary to some reports on Wednesday, no deal between the clubs has yet been agreed.

Defoe is a proven scorer in the Premier League - 14th on the all-time list with 124 goals from his time at West Ham, Spurs and Portsmouth.

QPR, Crystal Palace, Hull and Leicester are among the other clubs thought to be keen on the 32-year-old, who has scored 11 times in 19 appearances since joining MLS side Toronto last year.

According to Sky sources, the 42-year-old Schwarzer will sign a short-term loan deal on Monday but will remain on Chelsea’s books.

Defoe, however, could make a permanent switch from the MLS because his club Toronto FC are not said to be interested in allowing the Englishman leave on loan or on a short-term contract.

The 32-year-old former West Ham and Tottenham forward is also attracting interest from QPR and Hull City.

BRUCE PLAYS DOWN DEFOE LINK

Hull are in need of reinforcements during January, but manager Steve Bruce played down suggestions former England striker Jermain Defoe was on his way to the club.

Bruce said: "He might be too expensive. If there is a chance we would be interested in him, but I don't want to get the hopes up of all the Hull supporters. There is a long way to go.”

We can confirm that @IAmJermainDefoe will train with our Development Squad for the next week to maintain fitness during MLS close season.

“I don’t think I’m alone in being interested in Jermain Defoe either, who seems to be available, but the figures and the finances might just be beyond us.

“We’ll have a go. We have got four or five things on-going but whether it’s financially possible for us to do something in this window is debatable.

“If a player becomes available that will help us get better going forward then we’ll always try and act but we’ll have to wait and see. As usual, it will probably happen in the last couple of days of the window. Everyone’s jockeying for position.”

Hull boss Bruce admits he is interested in Toronto striker Defoe

Hull manager Steve Bruce has admitted he wants to boost his striking options by bringing Toronto striker Jermain Defoe to the KC Stadium.

City's 1-0 defeat to West Brom plunged the Tigers into the relegation zone and Bruce's injury problems increased with strikers Nikica Jelavic and Abel Hernandez being ruled out with knee and groin problems respectively.

Bruce said: "I, probably like (West Brom boss) Tony Pulis and (Leicester manager) Nigel Pearson and all the people, would like a Jermain Defoe.

"The numbers might cause a problem but then again I suppose that would be the same for most of the teams in the bottom half because he's very expensive. It might be just beyond us.

"The one thing you don't want to do is gamble. We've seen all sorts of clubs get into a financial mess by pushing the boat out.

"But if there's someone who can make a difference I'll be knocking the door down like I always have done. We've got to get an individual in who can make a difference.

"It's always difficult talking about someone else's player.

"They (Toronto) paid a lot of money for him and by all accounts they don't really want to let him go. We'll have to see what develops."

Despite their injury problems Bruce insists that Hull will still be up for the survival fight ahead.

He said: "It has been a bit of a toil for us but even with the all problems we've got we were very comfortable (against West Brom until Albion's 78th-minute winner).

"It's been the story of the season so far and certainly we need that to turn around for us and a bit of luck in that situation - to have eight or nine out is huge for a club like ours.

"But bring on next week, and we'll keep on fighting.

"It's so close and so tight (in the relegation battle) that it's scary - there's eight teams in it and I said all along there would be.

"I didn't envisage it being this tight but it's all to play for."
