Arsenal sign Gabriel Paulista as Joel Campbell joins Villarreal

Arsenal have signed Villarreal defender Gabriel Paulista for an undisclosed fee with forward Joel Campbell joining the Spanish side on loan until the summer.

Brazilian Gabriel, 24, can play at centre-back or full-back and was ever-present for Villarreal this season.

He said: "I had a talk with my family and I told them that it was my dream to play in the Premier League.

"The fans can expect a Gabriel that on the field has a lot of will to be able to help the team win important things."

Arsenal were granted a work permit for Gabriel on Monday, despite the fact he is uncapped and not a European Union citizen.

He joined Villarreal from Brazilian club Vitoria in 2013.

Campbell, 22, has signed a new long-term contract with the Gunners before heading to Villarreal for the rest of the season.

He signed for Arsenal in 2011 from Costa Rican club Deportivo Saprissa SAD but has yet to score the Gunners.

He has been loaned out to French club FC Lorient, Spanish side Real Betis and Greek outfit Olympiakos in the past.

Campbell has grown frustrated at his lack of starting opportunities.

Gabriel spoke out on Saturday, after playing in Villarreal’s home win over Athletic Bilbao, and he confirmed that there was interest in him from Arsenal.

Gabriel spoke in a previous interview about his desire to play in England. “Playing in the Premier League is one of my dreams,” he said. “I have spoken to my agent about this.”

Villarreal defender Gabriel Paulista is to join Arsenal with striker Joel Campbell moving the opposite way on loan, according to the Spanish club.

The La Liga outfit say an agreement has been reached in principle for the £15m-rated 24-year-old to move to London.

They also say Costa Rica international Campbell, 22, will move to Spain for the rest of the season.

However, Arsenal will have to secure a work permit before completing a deal for uncapped Brazilian Paulista.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confirmed on Thursday that the Premier League club was in talks over the signing of the centre-back, who joined Villarreal from Brazilian club Vitoria in 2013.

Given the potential work permit issues, he said there was a 50-50 chance the player would move to the Emirates Stadium.

Campbell signed for Arsenal in 2011 from Costa Rican club Saprissa.

He has since been loaned out to French club L'Orient, Spanish club Real Betis and Greek side Olympiacos.

Campbell helped his country reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 and has made 10 appearances - without scoring a goal - for Arsenal this season.

Arsenal to complete £15m transfer for Brazilian defender on Wednesday

The Villarreal centre back has impressed for La Liga's third meanest defence this season, and there were suggestions he was also a target for Manchester United.

Spanish radio show El Larguero, of Cadena SER, believe the transfer will go ahead on Wednesday, although Gabriel is unlikely to feature in Arsenal's FA Cup match this weekend.

Villarreal manager Marcelino Garcia Toral confirmed:

"If both Gabriel Paulista and the club believe that his sale to Arsenal is the best for all parties, we will accept."

Arsenal are closing in on a £15m deal for Villarreal defender Gabriel Paulista but face a battle with the home office to get a work permit for the Brazilian defender, according to the Daily Mail.

However, Sky sources understand the Gunners are interested in the 24-year-old, who played in Villarreal's 1-0 win over Getafe last night, but formal talks have yet to take place between the two clubs.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed Arsenal are holding talks with Villarreal over the signing of defender Gabriel Paulista.

Wenger said: “He’s just come from Poland, he’s just turned 17, he’s not fit because they had the winter break in Poland.

That is quite long, so he’s at the start of getting back to full fitness, he’s not ready for three weeks.”

Although Bielik can play in a defensive role, Wenger insists he will play as a holding midfielder.

Regarding Bielik's fitness, he said: "He's not fit because they had the long winter break in Poland so he's at the start of getting back to full fitness and will not be ready for three weeks."

But because Paulista is not a European Union citizen and has yet to establish himself as a senior Brazil international, he would not meet the automatic work permit criteria.

Arsenal would have to convince a Football Association hearing that the defender was an "exceptional talent" and so should be granted permission to work in the United Kingdom.

That recommendation would then be passed on to the government department for a final ruling.

Wenger said that Hector Bellerin should be available for Saturday's FA Cup tie at Brighton following ankle trouble, but midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (groin) is a doubt.

The Arsenal manager also said that England striker Danny Welbeck "will need two more games to be back again" and is not in full training yet.

Villarreal have confirmed their defender Gabriel Paulista will sign for Arsenal subject to a work permit, with forward Joel Campbell joining the Spanish side on loan as part of the deal.

Sky sources reported last Tuesday that the Gunners had begun talks to sign the 24 year-old Brazilian, which was confirmed by manager Arsene Wenger on Thursday.

Paulista has agreed a long-term deal, with a fee believed to be £11.2million agreed between the clubs, and Villarreal pay Arsenal £700k to loan Costa Rica international Campbell.

Paulista's release clause was believed to be £14.9m but Arsenal have been able to reduce the cost after several days of negotiations that Wenger expressed were "progressing quite well".

Ahead of his side's FA Cup fourth round tie at Brighton tomorrow, the Frenchman said: "We are ready to pay the price we think right for a good player, no matter what the price is. If we think it’s the right price we will pay.”

Paulista joined Villarreal from Brazilian side Vitoria in 2013 and has made 45 appearances for the club, but he has never been picked for his national side at youth or senior level.

Arsenal striker Campbell, meanwhile, was made available for loan after failing to break into the first team following an impressive World Cup last summer, with a number clubs interested in bringing him in.

Among those were Garry Monk's Swansea and David Moyes' Real Sociedad, but the 22-year-old will continue his development on the east coast of Spain as Villarreal continue their push for a place in Europe next season.
