Stoke 1-1 Chelsea (5-4 after penalties): Eden Hazard misses crucial spot-kick

Last Updated: 27/10/15 11:16pm

Eden Hazard missed the decisive penalty in the shoot-out as beleaguered Chelsea were knocked out of the Capital One Cup by 10-man Stoke.

The holders, who lost Diego Costa to injury in the first half, had come back from the brink to force extra-time, with Loic Remy's late equaliser cancelling out Jon Walters' fine 52nd-minute strike.

Stoke had Phil Bardsley sent off in second half injury-time but held on for the added 30 minutes to force penalties.

The first nine attempts were all scored but Jack Butland then pulled off a brilliant stop to deny Hazard and pile the pressure on Jose Mourinho and his struggling side.

The Premier League champions have now suffered four defeats in their last six games in all competitions and could be without Costa for their crunch clash against Liverpool this weekend after he was reportedly taken to hospital with a chest injury.

Without the Spaniard, the Blues pushed hard for a winner in extra-time at the Britannia but could not find a way past Butland, who made a sharp late stop to keep the game level.

Both sides named strong starting line-ups for the clash, with Hazard, Costa and Oscar in the XI for Chelsea and Ryan Shawcross making his first appearance of the season for Stoke.

The Blues started brightly and Butland was called into action early to keep out a near-post effort from Costa and a shot from Oscar.

Ramires should have given the visitors the lead when he rounded Butland after half an hour but failed to hit the target with the goal at his mercy.

Costa was then forced off holding his side with an injury that looked to be sustained during a challenge with Shawcross and Charlie Adam.

Stoke's best chance of the half came at the end as Walters turned in the box but saw his shot blocked by the outrushing Asmir Begovic.

The Potters forward would not be denied for long as, shortly after the interval, he was teed up on the edge of the box and sent a fantastic strike crashing in off the underside of bar.

Kurt Zouma and substitutes Kenedy and Bertrand Traore were unable to convert equaliser attempts, and Walters also missed a couple of chances to add to his effort.

Stoppage time then saw things dramatically turn in Chelsea's favour, with Remy rifling in Zouma's knock-down from a Willian corner and Bardsley being shown a second yellow card after a tackle on Kenedy.

The first half of the additional period saw Chelsea threaten through Hazard and a Traore header, while Marko Arnautovic fired a shot just wide of Begovic's post.

Willian went close in the second 15 minutes and Butland saved from Traore with his feet before touching the ball away as it skidded goalwards off Kenedy.

The England goalkeeper then proved the hero of the night as he made the decisive intervention in the shootout to send Stoke through to the quarter-finals.

Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 Arsenal: Arsene Wenger's men crash out of Capital One Cup

Last Updated: 27/10/15 11:01pm

Sheffield Wednesday produced one of the shocks of this season’s Capital One Cup to reach the quarter-finals as they stunned Arsenal with a 3-0 victory at Hillsborough.

On a damaging night for Arsenal, the Premier League side lost both Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and his replacement Theo Walcott to injury within the first 19 minutes of the match.

The Gunners' woe was further compounded as the Championship side raced into a 2-0 lead at the break thanks to goals from Ross Wallace and Lucas Joao.

Carlos Carvalhal's side continued where they left off after the interval as Sam Hutchinson bundled home Kieran Lee's cross to inflict Arsenal's worst defeat to lower-league opposition in 56 years and send Sheffield Wednesday cruising into the last eight for the first time since 2002.

Wenger, who handed debuts to Alex Iwobi and Glen Kamara, made eight changes to the side that beat Everton 2-1 at the weekend with Petr Cech, Olivier Giroud and Oxlade-Chamberlain the only survivors.

In front of 36,065 fans at Hillsborough, Arsenal looked to stamp their authority on the game in the early stages but they were hampered when Oxlade-Chamberlain left the field in the fifth minute with a tight hamstring.

He was replaced by England colleague Walcott but he too soon pulled up - clutching his calf - and was eventually replaced by Ismael Bennacer.

The night got worse for the Premier League side when Sheffield Wednesday - backed by strong support from the Hillsborough crowd - took the lead in the 28th minute through Wallace. Barry Bannan released Pudil down the left and from his cut-back, Wallace curled the ball beyond Cech and into the bottom corner.

Hillsborough was rocking and Wallace was only inches away from a second minutes later, curling a 20-yard free-kick just wide.

<img src="http://e2.365dm.com/15/10/16-9/20/theo-walcott-sheffield-wednesday-arsenal_3369390.jpg?20151027202408/img]</div><div> </div><div>Wednesday were now full of confidence and Arsenal needed Cech to keep out Jeremy Helan's effort. However, he could not repel Joao's powerful 40th-minute header, Wallace turning provider from Helan's short corner.</div><div> </div><div>The Gunners were back out after the interval well before their hosts, clearly keen to stage a second-half comeback, but any such hopes were dashed six minutes after the restart as Hutchinson made it three.</div><div> </div><div>Bannan clipped a free-kick to the far post where Tom Lees was unmarked and his ball back across goal was easily scooped home by Hutchinson.</div><div> </div><div>Arsenal enjoyed plenty of the ball, but they rarely tested rookie Wednesday goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith, who was a spectator for much of the final 30 minutes.</div><div> </div><div>[img]http://e2.365dm.com/15/10/16-9/20/kieran-gibbs-capital-one-cup-sheffield-wednesday_3369403.jpg?20151027203928"  alt=""  ="">

The one time Wildsmith was called into action, he superbly turned Per Mertesacker's header over the bar as Wednesday saw out a famous win - a ninth game in all competitions without defeat and a second successive Premier League scalp following a third-round victory at Newcastle.

It means that Arsene Wenger's wait for a first League Cup of his lengthy reign goes on and the Gunners have not won this competition since 1993, when they were victors over the Owls at Wembley.

Everton 1-1 Norwich (4-3 after penalties): Toffees reach quarter-finals after shoot-out

Last Updated: 27/10/15 11:08pm

Everton booked their place in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals with a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Norwich City at Goodison Park.

The two sides could not be separated after 120 minutes in a 1-1 draw, but the Toffees converted all four of their penalties while Joel Robles saved from Wes Hoolahan and Nathan Redmond shot over when needing to score as Everton progressed 4-3.

Sebastien Bassong's first goal since December 2012 had given the visitors a deserved lead after a dominant first-half display but Everton captain Leon Osman's 68th-minute strike hauled a lacklustre Everton side back into contention.

Robles then made a fantastic save from Lewis Grabban in the final minute of normal time before helping the hosts gain the upper hand in the shoot-out by denying Hoolahan.

A combined 15 changes were made to the starting line-ups and it contributed towards an error-strewn first period, yet despite being in the ascendancy the visitors failed to carve out a clear sight of goal.

Everton finally woke up midway through the half and went on create the clearest openings on goal. Again it was a mishap which opened the door, this time Bassong firing straight at Tyias Browning, who rolled a pass into Romelu Lukaku only for the Belgian to dither and drill into stopper Declan Rudd's legs.

The passing style Martinez endorses finally reared its head with an attack started by Gibson's terrific long ball to Bryan Oviedo. He shifted the ball inside to Kevin Mirallas and he fed James McCarthy, whose first-time pass towards Lukaku was almost toed beyond Rudd.

Six minutes after the restart, Norwich went ahead through an unlikely source. Redmond sent a deep corner towards the back post and after neither Ramiro Funes Mori nor Osman could clear, Gary O'Neil put the ball into the six-yard box where Bassong was on hand to hook a first-time finish in.

The hosts were then lucky Vadis Odjidja lost his footing when lining up a shot as Martinez called on reinforcements for his ponderous midfield in the form of Ross Barkley and Gerard Deulofeu.

And the duo's presence helped provide a spark as Everton levelled. After Lukaku's prod had been turned off the line by Martin Olsson, Mirallas' left-wing cross was finished by a sweeping Osman shot that hit the far post and trickled in.

Bassong got back to prevent Mirallas applying the finishing touch to Oviedo's centre as Everton finally took charge for a prolonged spell that was only interrupted by Robles' save from Grabban after Gibson once again lost the ball in his own area.

Lukaku came close with a free header from close-range, while Olsson's long-range try tested Robles and Rudd's fingertips diverted Mirallas' free-kick over as both teams sought a winner in normal time.

Grabban thought he had that in the final minute only to see Robles' right hand claw away his header and force an extra 30 minutes.

With penalties looming, Lukaku's shot almost snatched victory but it fell on the other side of the post after hitting Bassong, while Barkley blazed the final touch of the 120 minutes over after Rudd pushed Oviedo's shot into his path.

In the shoot-out Deulofeu, Barkley, Lukaku and Gibson all scored while Hoolahan was left ruing a slip which assisted Robles in saving from him before Redmond got his placement all wrong in firing over.

Hull 1-1 Leicester (5-4 after penalties): Mahrez miss sends Tigers through

Last Updated: 27/10/15 11:20pm

Riyad Mahrez's missed penalty sent Hull City through to the Capital One Cup quarter-finals after a 5-4 shoot-out win over Leicester City at the KC Stadium.

Mahrez put the Foxes ahead in the first period of extra time, slotting home on 100 minutes after Jamie Vardy broke the Tigers' offside trap.

Eldin Jakupovic denied the in-form England striker, but Mahrez followed up to tap into an empty net.

Abel Hernandez equalised for Hull five minutes later, sliding home from inside the six-yard box after Chuba Akpom's low shot was parried by Mark Schwarzer.

Mahrez brought Leicester to life after his introduction in the second half, but the winger's opening penalty in the shoot-out was saved by Jakupovic and it proved decisive.

The next eight takers all scored, and David Meyler stepped up to bury the winning spot-kick to send Hull through to their first Capital One Cup quarter-final in the club's history.

The Tigers, looking to stretch their unbeaten run to nine games in all competitions, had the better of the first-half.

Greg Luer was presented with the their best opportunity inside three minutes, but a superb Leicester block denied a certain goal after good work from Mohamed Diame down the right had set up the former Burgess Hill Town striker.

Shaun Maloney then went close with an acrobatic overhead kick, while Diame, the best player on the pitch in the first 45 minutes, blazed over in the 38th minute after Andrew Robertson's low centre.

The Scotland defender was a key outlet for Steve Bruce's side as Leicester sat back and soaked up Hull's pressure.

Claudio Ranieri, who made 10 changes from the victory over Crystal Palace, looked to hit the Championship opposition on the break, but his team failed to create a single clear-cut opening before the interval - Andrej Kramaric's effort from range inside 20 seconds was the Foxes' only strike on goal before half-time.

The second half came alive in the final 10 minutes as Schwarzer almost gifted Hull the lead from a corner. The Leicester 'keeper flapped at Maloney's cross, but scrambled back and the Foxes cleared off their own line.

iame and Ryan Taylor had gone close earlier for the Tigers, while second half substitutes Vardy and Mahrez livened up a stale Leicester attack in the closing stages.

Mahrez saw a goal-bound strike superbly blocked by Harry Maguire in stoppage time but Schwarzer's error was the closest either side came to a goal inside 90 minutes.

The match sprung to life in the first period of extra time, as Mahrez put the Foxes ahead despite protests from Hull. The Leicester winger tapped home after a lightning counter-attack had released Vardy, but the opportunity started with a Hull penalty appeal in the Leicester box.

Hernandez levelled the scores five minutes later, bundling home from two yards after Schwarzer palmed Akpom's shot back in the danger area.

Both sides then looked happy to settle for penalties, only for Mahrez to miss with the Foxes' first effort. Jakupovic saved well down to his left-hand side, setting up Meyler with the chance to make history for his side after the two teams had traded successful spot-kicks.

The midfielder did not disappoint, blasting high into the net to send Bruce's side through to the last eight.
